Tony Gilroy hasn’t sat in a director’s chair since 2012, when The Bourne Legacy wrapped and he moved on to building an entire galaxy of paranoid rebels for Andor. Now he’s back, and he’s swapped blasters for bows: Searchlight dropped the first trailer for Behemoth! on July 14, and it stars Pedro Pascal as a cellist crawling home to Los Angeles after two decades of touring. Pascal, who spent years being tossed off cliffs and into harnesses for The Last of Us and beyond, says learning the instrument nearly broke him worse than any stunt ever did. Around him, Gilroy has assembled a strange and starry orchestra: Olivia Wilde as the ex, Hank Azaria as the father, Will Arnett stepping in for a departed David Harbour as the brother. Theaters get their turn on December 4.

Tony Gilroy built his recent reputation as the creator and showrunner of Andor, the Star Wars series that ran on Disney+ from 2022 to 2025. Now he is trading rebellions for concert halls. Pedro Pascal trades action for artistry
Pedro Pascal plays Alex Serian, a gifted cellist who comes home to Los Angeles after 20 years on the road, rejoining a family of working musicians. Pascal took over the lead after Oscar Isaac exited the project in August 2025, and the role demanded intensive cello training. He called it “literally the hardest, hardest, hardest thing I’ve ever had to learn to do,” ranking it above his physical stunt work, “being in a gladiator arena or hanging from a harness.”
A rich ensemble cast and a fast-moving production
The cast around Pascal runs deep. Olivia Wilde plays Carol, Alex’s ex, while Eva Victor appears as Nadia, a fellow cellist who becomes his love interest. Hank Azaria plays his musician father, and Will Arnett portrays his brother, a part he inherited when David Harbour left the production in January 2026. Alexa Swinton, Kaya Ralls, Erik Griffin, JoBeth Williams, Margarita Levieva and Matthew Lillard round out the ensemble.
Principal photography moved quickly: cameras rolled in Los Angeles from October 27, 2025 to January 23, 2026, with Damián García behind the lens. The score comes from an unusual nine-composer group dubbed The Behemoth! Collective, whose members include Michael Giacchino, Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, Henry Jackman, Michael Abels, Emily Bear, Lukas Frank, Nami Melumad and Brandon Roberts.
A love letter to music and cinema
Pascal has framed the project simply: “It’s a love letter to music; it’s a love letter to movies,” he told Variety. Gilroy wrote and directed the film and produces alongside John Gilroy and Sanne Wohlenberg, keeping the family collaboration that shaped much of his earlier work intact. Searchlight has kept plot details beyond the official synopsis under wraps for now. Behemoth! opens in US theaters on December 4, 2026.
