“Because we are resurrecting this work with five women in the roles it also feels like a moment where, this is like the moment where this can be and will be produced over and over and over again with women all over the country. That is the thing that makes me excited for people to know Whoopi Goldberg as a playwright. And the fact that it’s like a huge feat to do this, as a one woman show, we’re doing it five different women, five different monologues. But like, she does a one woman show, which is a lot.”

I am so grateful that Whoopi had the courage to create this masterful work and it had such a huge impact on me as a young person and how I think about art and what I think of as the purpose of art and the power of art. “The thing that I will say that makes the show most special are the black women who have shaped it and created it. Whoopi, obviously this is her brainchild first. But the women that are part of this production. Kecia Lewis, Dominique Fishback, Kara Young, I mean, Kerry Washington. The sisterhood that is in this, and just, I’ve never quite experienced anything like this in my life or my career. Truly. The black women that are behind this piece that are on the stage, it is very political to see all of that. You don’t see a lot of all black female led plays. It’s a pinch me moment. It really is. I’m so grateful to be a part of this.”

“It’s great, of course, to see this done and so many years later, it’s still very relevant, still very important. And, to see it done in this way, with these, with now different women taking on this thing that Whoopi did, which of course, this huge tour de force. But I think it’s a testament to the staying power of the material and a testament to her connection with humanity writ large. And we see it continue with everything that she does. And I’m just I’m just very excited for her.”

“What she created was a classic. Because I remember I literally had just come in New York school. I saw it off Broadway in previews, and I was like, who is this woman? Who is this actor? Who is this writer? And, I’ll never forget how it just really blew me away. And to be here all these years later knowing that it’s still impactful. What makes something classic? It speaks to people when it was written. It speaks to people presently and will speak to us long after we’re gone, because it speaks to our humanity across time, place, gender, race, age, everything. And so I’m just happy to see that it’s still, being received.”
