The cabin was supposed to be a retreat and the Pacific Northwest forest surrounding it looked exactly like peace until the markings started appearing and the livestock from the nearby farm were found mutilated and the sounds coming through the trees each night stopped resembling anything with a natural explanation. Charlize Theron plays Sara with platinum hair in a messy braid and ice-blue eyes and the particular sharpness of a survivalist who takes charge before anyone else has finished processing what is happening, hunting rifle across her back and tactical gloves on and already thinking three moves ahead of a creature she has not fully seen yet. Megan Fox plays Dana with raven-black hair loose and wild and dark circles under her eyes from nights she could not sleep because she felt the danger before the others admitted it was real, the first to believe something ancient and supernatural has been disturbed and the first to reach for the hunting knife on her hip. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Marcus as the skeptic, dirty blonde beard dusted with frost and blue-grey eyes wide with building panic, the rational man who holds out longest and becomes the most determined to destroy it the moment he sees it with his own eyes. The Wendigo walks the tree line over eight feet tall with a bleached white deer skull for a face and blood-red antlers branching above it and grotesquely elongated arms hanging past its knees, stalking through snow with reverse-jointed legs and curved black claws, tearing through walls and disappearing into the dark and growing bolder every night. The three arm themselves and set traps and venture into the forest to hunt it and the further they go the less certain any of them is that the creature has not already gotten inside their heads.

Nine to eleven hours on this one. Building the Wendigo’s presence through what it does to the environment before it fully reveals itself took serious tonal discipline. Multiple tools, multiple full passes. Every frozen footprint and every blood-red antler earned its place.
