Fresh off his Hot Ones upchuck situation, Tom Holland wants to push himself even further. Thankfully he doesn’t mean this gastroenterological sense. In a conversation with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Live With Kelly & Mark, Holland says he sees The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the end of the first chapter in his career. “I don’t feel like I can get away with playing a boy anymore,” he says, which makes sense, given Peter Parker is kind of the ultimate nephew. To embody Fred Astaire is to have a certain boyishness, sure, but that crazy dancer was a man, through and through. In order to tackle Astaire, Holland told the duo that he plans to do all the dancing in the film himself. “One of my biggest regrets in my career is after I finished Billy Elliot, I quit dancing,” he explains. He says he might still be able to do the old Billy Elliot choreography, but if he did them in front of the choreographers of the show, they wouldn’t be happy about it. “It wouldn’t look nearly as good as when I was 12,” he says, which is kind of just how aging works.
We don’t have much other info on this Astaire flick — whether it’s a biopic or not — other than Paul King, the genius behind the good Paddington movies and Wonka, will be directing, which feels like an apt fit. Here’s a crazy pitch for you. Maybe these two are sick of working together, but Zendaya as Ginger Rogers? Why not? Who cares! It’d be fun to see the two of them in this mode, which would undoubtedly please fans of the still-circulating Lip Sync Battle video.
