When Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt announced their split in 2005, early reports framed it as a mutual decision that came down to the couple’s different priorities. A source told People magazine that Jennifer had initiated the split, and then-People executive editor Peter Castro told Good Morning America that their differing timelines for having kids had contributed to it. “This is what he wanted more than anything,” Peter said. “But she wasn’t there with him. The timing was off.”

At the same time, tabloids were filled with rumors that Brad had gotten close to his Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star Angelina Jolie. Angelina denied that they’d had an affair, with Brad calling the rumors “completely untrue.” But the rumors never stopped. Although Brad has maintained that they only got together after his marriage to Jennifer was over, Angelina later admitted that they fell in love while making the 2005 film.2. When Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello announced their split in July 2023 after seven years of marriage, they simply asked for privacy as they navigated “this new phase” of their lives. Early reports suggested the two had grown apart due to personality and lifestyle differences. However, Sofía later shared a different explanation.

Speaking to the Spanish newspaper El País, Sofía said, “My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom.”Joe later disputed her claims. “[The matter of having kids] wasn’t inevitably why everything ended,” he told Men’s Journal. “It’s because two people grew apart, and sometimes that happens.”

3. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes shocked fans when they split in 2012 after six years of marriage. Katie filed for divorce while also seeking sole custody of their daughter Suri, in a move that reportedly came as a “complete surprise” to Tom. “Tom is deeply saddened,” his publicist said in a statement at the time.

Almost immediately, rumors swirled that Scientology had played a role in the split. While neither Tom nor Katie addressed those rumors at the time, Tom later made a notable admission during a 2013 deposition connected to his defamation lawsuit against In Touch and Life & Style.

After Joe Jonas filed for divorce from Sophie Turner in September 2023, after four years of marriage, they released a joint statement calling it a “united decision.” However, court documents later alleged that Sophie had learned of the split “through the media” rather than from Joe. The filings also claimed that the marriage broke down “very suddenly” after an “argument” between the couple on Joe’s birthday, Aug. 15.

Around the same time, a report emerged claiming that Joe allegedly saw or heard something on a Ring Camera that led him to realize “the marriage was over.” Unfortunately, neither Joe nor Sophie has publicly confirmed what, if anything, was captured.

When Shakira and Gerard Piqué announced their split in 2022 after 11 years together, they released a brief statement saying they were “parting ways” and asking for privacy. Not long after, rumors that Gerard had been unfaithful began to emerge. Shakira later appeared to amplify the speculation on a scathing diss track, and Gerard certainly didn’t help the rumors when he claimed he was faithful to himself in a viral interview. However, Shakira has never said exactly why they split, calling the reason “too private” to share.

6. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck had been married for less than two years when breakup rumors began swirling in May 2024, after Ben was noticeably absent from several of Jennifer’s major public appearances. Neither of them addressed the speculation at first, but reports soon emerged claiming that the marriage had indeed been strained for months — and that the two had even been living apart.According to People, one of the biggest issues was the couple’s conflicting attitudes about fame.”They just have very different approaches when it comes to media attention,” one source said. “Ben hates all attention and it makes him very uncomfortable. Jennifer has always had a different approach.”

Jennifer ultimately filed for divorce in August 2024 — notably on the second anniversary of their big Georgia wedding. At the time, a source told People that Jen had reached her breaking point after Ben allegedly failed to show any “interest in making their marriage work.”“She’s very disappointed and sad, but Ben hasn’t given her any signs that he wants to continue their marriage,” a source said. “He hasn’t shown any commitment and interest in making their marriage work. It’s gotten to the point that she just needs to look out for herself.”

7. Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo

Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo quietly ended their marriage earlier this year after a decade together. The split only became public weeks later when TMZ reported that Jelly had filed for divorce on May 18, citing irreconcilable differences.

The insider claimed the singer, who has lost nearly 300 pounds on his health journey, had “changed a lot” and become “very focused on his future, his health, and being around for a long time.”

They’ve grown apart.”

An Entertainment Tonight source echoed that sentiment, saying that “Joe is more introverted, shy, and quiet” than Taylor.People’s source went on to claim that much of the couple’s relationship unfolded during an unusually sheltered chapter in Taylor’s life. “They had plenty in common and fell in love in a safe bubble while she was retreating from the world during Reputation,” the insider said. “Then the pandemic hit, and they were locked down together and able to continue growing their relationship in this insulated way. But he didn’t really ‘know’ her yet outside of that bubble.”

The source added that the pair had been “living on an island of stress” before the breakup and described their relationship as increasingly “rocky.”Early reporting from People had also suggested that the overwhelming negative reception to Katy’s 143 album and its accompanying tour placed additional pressure on the relationship. “Katy was deeply frustrated following the reception of her new album,” a source said. “It made her very stressed. Orlando was understanding, but it did cause some tension.”

10. Finally, Nina Dobrev and Shaun White

When Nina Dobrev and Shaun White called off their engagement in September 2025 after five years together, initial reports suggested the split was amicable. A source told People that it was a “mutual decision,” and while it “wasn’t an easy one,” it “was made with love and a deep respect for one another.” Not long afterward, however, another report painted a far more complicated picture.
