For context on the reasoning for the rule- Donald Sutherland suffered from hepatitis, rheumatic fever and polio as a child; and contracted meningitis in 1969, which caused him to fall into a 6 day coma. While Donald was a prolific smoker in his past, often smoking up to 4 packs a day; he quit smoking in 1981 after he married Francine Racette. This clause in his contracted was first reported back in 1992, due to the fact the smoke affected his breathing.
Donald Sutherland has since passed away from COPD.

What a really fucking shitty thing to choose to smoke around someone with a condition severe enough its in his contract
Keira Knightly being careless and selfish, what a surprise

At this point Keira Knightly should just stop doing interviews for her own sake… what a crappy thing to do and then to giggle over it as if it is some fun little anecdote

Not only rude and disrespectful back then, but knowing that he died from that condition, coming to say this and laugh about it years later?! Zero class or empathy.
I just woke up
Keira Knightley’s on a streak of awful takes. Damn.

Every time I see a Keira Knightley interview, she always comes off worse.
Smoking around someone who isn’t a smoker is a shitty thing to do. Doing it around someone who was addicted and worked very hard to stop for his health is egregious
I am allergic to tobacco and am hypersensitive to poor air quality. I have never had a smoker care if their smoking is hurting me. It’s caused a lot of drama with relatives over the years and I haven’t been able to go to any family gatherings in a really long time.
Based on the comments I would’ve thought she went up to him and blew smoke in his face but sounds like they were all smoking and tried to be consciousness by spraying themselves and not doing it around him and then he himself put himself in a jokey position at a party where he said he wanted them to be able to smoke, so I’m just confused by the outrage.
All the comments freaking out about this being selfish etc. At no point are they smoking on front of him (except the party) in this story. It sounds like they are sneaking out for a cigarette and coming back and removing the smell.
I hate this little “funny” anecdotes celebrities share. They do it to come across more relatable but in reality it proves they live entirely separate lives to us normal folk.
I mean if I told this story and played it off as a bit of fun with people I know I’d rightly be chastised for being a selfish idiot
She was my queer awakening. I also loved as a small-chested teenager and girl that she embraced it. When she agreed to be apart of mold-brain litigious billionaire’s new audio book, I fully dropped her from my heart. My movie darling is an absolute idiot.

I just hate smokers. Y’all stink, even underneath all the fragrances you use to try to cover it up.
Why everyone so mad. I hate cigs but it sounds like they went away from him and went somewhere privately and smoked then sprayed themselves with something to get rid of the smell and then he rocked up to the after party protecting himself because he wanted him to be themselves and not worry bout him. People acting like the y kept smoking and blowing it in his face.
If this was anyone else saying this would you be this mad?
I’ve seen this going around X and people are tearing into KK. I get that Americans have this passionate hate against smoking compared to Brits but they weren’t actually smoking in front of Donald. They smoked somewhere else and covered the smell. At the party which was away from the set and where they weren’t banned from smoking (as per Donald’s contract) they smoked because, well they were allowed. He willingly joined them in that environment and protected himself with a mask.
It’s all a big nothing and a silly hate train to get on. It obvious that people didn’t watch the video.
This is so hilarious. Peak brat daughters behaviour (which Keira played in the film, Rosamund played the angel Jane but you never know what the quiet ones are up to when you’re not looking lol). He played Mr. Bennet with such warmth and cheekiness, though. A very interesting choice on his part, and that’s what made his siding with Lizzie in the end so brilliant. From all accounts, Donald enjoyed his time immensely with his Pride & Prejudice family despite originally feeling like his modern teeth weren’t a good fit for the time period depicted in the film. He had a sweet, teasing relationship off-camera with his on-screen wife and the actresses playing his daughters had a wonderful time with him.
It may seem like Keira and Rosamund are being flippant here but they aren’t, and the note in the post is weird. Donald Sutherland had no health issues during the filming related to smoking (despite his other older ailments listed) and “has since passed away” happened 19 years after.
Cant take Kiera seriously after her tone deaf comments on JK Rowling and her being a part of the audiobook
