American influencer Paige Lorenze and a local Nantucket arts and crafts business are embroiled in a tense stand-off over the store’s “No influencers” sign.

Lorenze, 28, who is married to tennis star Tommy Paul, left a passionate comment on Four Winds Craft Guild’s Instagram post in which they proudly pictured a sign hanging from their store ceiling that read “No influencers”.

The shop is a third generation antique business comprised of The Four Winds Craft Guild and Sylvia Antiques and will celebrate its 100th year in business next year.

After spotting the ‘No Influencer’ sign, Lorenze felt the store was trying to delegitimise entrepreneurial women working in social media.

On Monday (US time), the business posted a statement explaining why they put the sign there in the first place.

The business said owner John wasn’t even aware of who Lorenze was, noting he’s not active on social media.

“The No Influencers sign isn’t about [Lorenze] and never was – this is a cultural discussing – one to talk about openly and honestly in your own community/neighbourhood,” The Four Winds Craft Guild wrote.

“Do you like people filming around you? Talking on your streets into tiny microphones? Recording themselves in your shop? Recording you incidentally?

“Walking past a ring light as you quietly make your way to get a coffee at 8am? Recording next to you as you try to eat with friends? The list goes on and on.

“That’s all folks. Discuss amongst yourselves.”

In her initial comment, Lorenze wrote: “If you call yourself a feminist but proudly put up a ‘No Influencers’ sign, it’s worth asking who you are attempting to delegitimise, and why…”

“Mocking women when they become powerful in a new industry isn’t new. It’s just a strange message coming from a store that celebrates a craft with such a rich history of women shaping the island and its economy.

“One woman with a loyal audience can successfully launch a business at a scale that would have once required corporate backing and massive advertising budgets. That’s a win. This sign isn’t.”

The business deleted the post off their Instagram grid but continued to clap back and reshare the image of their “No influencers” sign on their Instagram stories.

They later shared an image noting their Instagram account had been reported.

“Imagine being so bored with life that you spend your pastime trying to report a photo on IG that makes you feel uncomfortable,” the business wrote.

Lorenze is a successful social media star and entrepreneur with 1.1 million Instagram followers and 846,000 on TikTok.

The highly publicised ceremony generated significant online buzz for its old money aesthetic and its departure from over-the-top, trendy influencer weddings.
