    1. This film was so made – it's shocking it descended into historical nonsense. Balian of Ibelin was the son of Barisan of Ibelin, was born a Lord of Jerusalem, and was never in France. Balian surrendered Jerusalem in 1187, and offered himself as a hostage since Saladin only allowed those wealthy enough to buy their way out of slavery. He participated in the 3rd Crusade, commanding a portion of Richards army in the battle of Jaffa in 1192.
