Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have a very special person they’ll want to celebrate today – their mum, the Princess of Wales. Like most families across the UK, the Wales family will be marking Mother’s Day with Kate no doubt in store for a day of treats.

As well as Kate, the young royals will probably be also saying thanks to their grandmother Carole Middleton, who has played a pivotal role in their upbringing and been a rock for the family after Kate’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy treatment. And along with Carole, they may have their other granny in their thoughts – their dad Prince Willilam’s late mother Princess Diana.

Even though she did not get to meet her grandchildren, William has spoken in the past about how he talks to his three children about their granny. And several years ago on Mother’s Day, he shared some cards created for Diana by the kids – with Charlotte’s containing a particularly poignant message.

Her message was on a fuchsia-coloured card with a hand-drawn multi-coloured heart. And in it, she made sure to mention how much her dad William misses his mum. Charlotte wrote: “Dear Granny Diana, I am thinking of you on mother’s day. I love you very much. Papa is missing you. Lots of love Charlotte xxxxxxxxx”.

Meanwhile, older brother George used joined-up writing on bright green card to say: “Dear granny Diana, Happy happy Mother’s Day. I love you very much and think of you always, sending lots of love from George xxxxx. And Louis, who was just two at the time, also used green card for his Mother’s Day card which featured a colourful heart surrounded by several animals – all of which had been stuck onto the card.

The cards were posted on the official Twitter account for the Prince and Princess of Wales where four images were uploaded, with a heartfelt message. In the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William spoke openly saying he is committed to making sure his children know all about their late grandmother.

He said wants his kids to “know who she was and that she existed” and told how he “constantly” talks to his children “about Granny Diana” at bedtime so that they know “there are two grandmothers in their lives”. The future king said: “We’ve got more photos up around the house now of her and we talk about her a bit.”

He added: “It’s hard because obviously Catherine didn’t know her so she cannot really provide that level of detail, so I regularly put George and Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try to remind them that there are two grandmothers, there were two grandmothers in their lives. So it’s important that they know who she was and that she existed.”

In recent years, William has been keeping his mother’s legacy alive by lanching a personal crusade to end homelessness, which he said is inspired by her. And the heir to the throne says Diana’s compassionate example spurred him to educate his own kids on the issue.

Talking on a landmark TV documentary last year, he said: “My mother introduced me to homelessness a long time ago.” William says on the programme: “I have taken some inspiration and guidance from what my mother did, particularly with homelessness. That has grown more over the last few years. When I was very small my mother started talking about homelessness – much like I do now with my children on the school run.”
