Prince William took some time to record a very special birthday message.
The Prince of Wales, 42, surprised T.V. chef and baking expert Mary Berry with a birthday message as she appeared on the U.K.’s The One Show in a special episode celebrating her 90th birthday on Monday, March 24.
Berry was played a series of birthday messages from famous friends, kicking off with a message from Prince William, leaving the former The Great British Bake Off judge visibly stunned.
Introducing the video, The One Show host said the message came from “somebody very special who says that you’ve taught him everything he knows about baking.”
“I want to wish you a very happy 90th birthday,” Prince William said in a selfie-style video. “You are a true national treasure, and we’ve loved working with you over the years. Have a fantastic day today.”
He then joked, “I dread to think who’s cooking your cake and the criticism they might get, but good luck and I hope it goes really well.”
An emotional Berry blinked back tears and said in reaction to the message, “What an honor.”

Prince William reposted a clip of the special moment shared on the show’s Instagram page on Monday as he wrote, “Happy birthday, Dame Mary! 🎂”
William and Kate Middleton previously appeared alongside Berry in a Christmas special episode of The Great British Bake Off in 2019 and shared how Berry’s cooking impacted their three children.
“One of [Prince] Louis’s first words was Mary because right at his height are all my cooking books in the kitchen bookshelf,” said Kate, per the U.K. newspaper Mirror. “Your face is all over your cooking books, and he would say, ‘That’s Mary Berry.’ “
Berry officially departed The Great British Bake Off in 2016 and was made a Dame Commander for her career in cooking and writing in 2021.

During Monday’s episode of The One Show, Berry also received birthday messages from friends Joanna Lumley, Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood, British chef and presenter Andi Oliver and her husband Paul.
Further highlights in the show include a visit to Berry’s childhood home in Bath, England, and a special performance from Michael Ball in her honor.
