Could Prince William strip Meghan Markle of royal title after he becomes king?

So, reports have emerged that Prince William is planning to strip Harry and Megan of their royal titles when he ascends to the throne. Now, these rumors have been floating around for a while now, and it all tracks back to when Harry and Megan first quit the royal family way back in 2020. At the time, they obviously had many discussions with the queen and other members of the royal family about what their roles were going to look like when they left the UK and moved to California. After a lot of discussion, it was decided that the two of them were no longer going to be able to use their HR titles. This is largely because those titles are afforded only to a very few people within the most upper echelons of the royal family. specifically those royals who are working members of the family, not just people who were born into it. Prince Andrew was stripped of his HR title after his involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, and many believed that when Harry and Megan left the royal family, they should lose the ability to use those royal titles in everyday life. Now, it’s a bit of a complicated subject because Harry and Megan have always gone by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, at least since they married and were afforded those titles by the Queen. However, there is a bit of a difference between using Duke and Duchess of Sussex almost like their names and then using those titles but adding the HR. That is something that Megan is understood to have done when she was sending out pots of her new jam to various influencers and friends. An image of a note that Megan had supposedly written which featured her HR title was posted on social media and it prompted a furious backlash. Many people believed that it was a disrespectful move, particularly because the queen had voiced her disapproval of Harry and Megan using those titles after they quit the royal family. Now, many thought that Charles might take a step forward after he ascended to the throne by preventing Megan and Harry not only from using HR, but also from using the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. However, it seems like he’s more eager to kind of fly under the radar, not to take any really serious steps in increasing that widening gap between Harry and Megan and the rest of the royals. At this point in time, the royal family is really doing all it can to play down the controversy as far as that whole situation is concerned. They’ve got other bigger things to be dealing with, including Charles’s own health battles. William, on the other hand, his aggravation, his frustration with his brother has really only grown since 2020. William is really hurt. He’s frustrated, and he’s annoyed that Harry and Megan continue to use their royal connections while essentially turning their back on every other aspect of royal life. So, it makes sense that he is considering taking more drastic action as far as banning Harry and Megan from using their royal titles in the future. I think in all honesty, it’s going to really be a case of where the situation lies when William does become king. Maybe by then things will have kind of smoothed over a little bit. Maybe William and Harry will have managed to kind of reach some sort of impass in their rift. But I think the way things are going at the moment and the way that things sit between Harry and William, it would make perfect sense that William would take that step in banning Harry and Megan officially from using the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moving forward. Charles was always very clear that he wanted a much smaller, more effective senior royal circle. So he really did kind of enact what he referred to as a slimmed down monarchy. Effectively, what that means is that the number of people who are considered to be senior working members of the royal family was drastically reduced. Essentially, Charles wanted to make sure that the royal family wasn’t seen to be needlessly spending money on sending various members of the family to different events, hiring security for them, etc., etc. Now, Charles has absolutely done this. he’s really put into practice that whole ethos, but it’s a slightly different thing when it comes to titles because at the end of the day, Harry and Megan aren’t going out to events on behalf of the royal family. They aren’t attending any kind of official engagements as members of the royal family. So, it’s a bit of an awkward situation because no one has really determined what their use of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles really means. They’ve continued to do it. People have kind of turned a blind eye. There’s a bit of a kind of disparity between what it means to use their HR titles and what it means to use their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles. And I think for the most part, Charles has settled on cutting them out of the royal family as far as going to events, being afforded government funded security when they’re in the UK. But he doesn’t want to take that next step by publicly stating that they are not allowed to use their HR titles because he knows that that is just going to stir up even more drama. taking that step would effectively be cutting the last thread that exists between the Sussex’s and the royals. And I think that Charles is of the mindset that it’s better to just let that go unnoticed rather than take action, which would require him to publicly state that relations between the Sussexes and the royals are completely disintegrated. Megan has always taken the view that her Duchess of Sussex title was bestowed upon her by the Queen and that despite the fact that she has left the royal family, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t continue to use it. Let’s all look at the moment in her Netflix series where she actually reprimanded her close friend Mindy Kaling for using her maiden name, Markle. Megan was very clear her last name is Sussex and that is how she should be known. And I think she’s also been very open about the fact that she fought for her children to have a prince and princess title. So even if she’s continuing to use the HR title only in private, I think Megan is very much of the mindset that it is a title that she earned that she was given and that she should be able to continue to use. Her husband is still Prince Harry. Her husband is still the Duke of Sussex. And she doesn’t feel that she should have to give up that right. Now, in terms of the private card surfacing on social media, Megan has never been one to fully address these kinds of controversies headon. She kind of skirts around them in an interesting way. But I think unless Megan is told outright, “You’re no longer allowed to do this.” And by outright, I do mean publicly. I think she’s going to continue doing what she wants. Typically, Megan and Harry don’t use HR in public. However, there have been a couple of instances over the years where the two of them have taken part in events and they’ve been introduced as HR. Now, in those circumstances, the kind of response has always been, we didn’t have control over that. It was the choice of the event organizers, the choice of whoever was putting together this and that. They have always maintained that publicly. They’ve adhered to the rules. They go by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but they do not use HR, at least not when they have control over a situation. This would not be the first time that a monarch had chosen to rescend titles from members of the royal family. It’s always been a bit of a touchy subject, and I think no matter the reasons for doing so, it’s always perceived publicly as a kind of slight against whoever’s title is being taken away. Now in Denmark, the queen decided to strip several members of the family of their royal titles. She removed prince and princess titles from various family members. And again, it caused huge controversy. Immediately there was furious speculation about why this had been done, who had offended the queen, what had caused her to take this action. And I think even if you are going at it from the view of wanting to slim down the monarchy, of wanting to kind of tighten things up as far as the royal family employees are concerned, it’s always going to be seen as a negative thing and it’s always going to stir up questions about why this action has been taken. Now, it’s interesting because in the case of William, he is fully within his rights when he becomes the monarch to remove whatever titles he sees fit. And I think at least as far as the British public is concerned, everyone would understand the reasons for him choosing to strip Harry and Megan of their royal titles. However, William may try to put a spin on it of we need to slim down the monarchy. They chose to leave the monarchy, but everyone is going to read into it and see something more significant. They are going to view this as William cutting ties with his brother once and for all. I think this is an an action that you do not come back from. So, it’s really going to be up to William to decide whether or not he is ready to take that final step in his relationship with his brother and effectively end it once and for all because Harry is not going to forgive that kind of action being taken. Prince Andrew was stripped of his HR titles back in 2022 following the fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. Now again it’s an interesting dynamic because Prince Andrew is still Prince Andrew. You have to think about it as when you are born into the royal family, Prince Andrew effectively becomes your name. So he is still referred to as Prince Andrew, but the HR bit of it has been removed. He is no longer allowed to use that in any official capacity. With regard to the Megan and Harry situation, obviously they have not been involved in any kind of scenario as serious as the Epstein controversy. However, they were the ones who made the decision to step away from the royal family. So if you look away from the emotional side of things, if you turn away from the whole rift, the this and that between the royals and the Sussexes, at the end of the day, this can be viewed very much as an administrative move. If you choose to leave a job, which is what Harry and Megan chose to do, you do not get to continue using the title. If you step down as the CEO of a company, you are no longer the CEO of that company. The HRH in Harry and Megan’s titles is given to them because they were working members of the royal family. When they chose to leave that job, they chose to walk away from those titles. And using them in any kind of capacity, whether it’s private or not, particularly using them when you are promoting products from another business, is deemed to be extremely disrespectful to the royal family. And I think that is cause enough for William, for Charles, whoever it may be to make the decision to publicly state that that is not something that the royal family will allow moving forward. Now, the reason that this whole controversy has erupted comes down to a card that Megan sent to a female beauty founder called Jamie Karn Lemur. She founded It Cosmetics and she just launched her own podcast on which Megan appeared as a guest. Now, the two of them covered a wide variety of topics, much of which has served as content for headlines the world over. It’s actually the first podcast appearance that Megan has made as a guest rather than as a host. And I think it’s interesting to note that the podcast with her as a guest has far outperformed any of the episodes that she has hosted on either of her own podcasts. Now, the two of them got into a lot of emotional territory. Megan actually teared up at one point while she was talking about an emotional gift that she plans to leave her children. She said that she has been writing them different emails on a day-to-day basis just talking about things that they’ve done, talking about their family activities. And when the kids get older, she plans to send them this trove of emails that will serve as a kind of emotional memory for the two of them so that they can recall their their upbringing on this amazing Monteito property where the family lives. I think it’s important to note with regard to this podcast interview that Megan has been a lot more open recently about her family life, about her role as a mother, about her role as a wife. She gushed a lot about her relationship with Prince Harry. She talked about how much he loves her and how much she feels wanted and supported by her husband. And that kind of dynamic has extended elsewhere, too. We’ve seen it on her Instagram. She kind of returned to social media on January 1st ahead of the launch of her brand as ever, which was previously known as American Riviera Orchard. And she’s been touting her products on there, but she’s also been giving a lot of inside looks into her life in Monteito. We’ve seen glimpses of the children, albeit always from the back because she wants to maintain their privacy. We’ve seen clips of her with her mother, the two of them making food, the two of them using Megan’s jam in various different dishes. And I think it’s a really interesting thing given that Megan and Harry left the royal family because they wanted privacy. They didn’t want their lives to be subject to constant scrutiny. And yet, here we are just five years later and Megan is kind of opening herself up to various different outlets. You know, we’ve got her doing interviews with People magazine. We’ve got her appearing on podcasts wearing no makeup. And it seems to me that Megan has kind of decided that the time is nigh for her to return to more of her celebrity status that she held prior to joining the royal family, prior to meeting Prince Harry. Before Megan ever met Harry, she was a semi- well-known actress on the legal drama Suits, but she hadn’t yet achieved that kind of global fame that she was really, really kind of seeking. And I think now she’s realized that after being a member of the royal family, even for such a brief time, she’s now achieved that notoriety that she always wanted. She has people clamoring after her, wanting to send her gifts, wanting to receive jars of her jam, wanting to put her on a podcast. And I think Megan from the outside appears to have kind of shed any concern about really embracing that celebrity status. And she’s now going all out. She’s going to be on podcast. She’s going to host podcasts. She’s going to go around to Gwyneth Paltro’s house for breakfast, pie, whatever it is. And I think we can expect to see a lot more of Megan from the celebrity side of things than we ever did of her as a royal. Megan did finally address the rumors that she’s planning to run for political office and insisted that they are not true. She said that she never planned to run for office. She doesn’t want to run for office. She’s very happy doing what she’s doing right now. Similarly, she addressed the idea that she may one day write her own tell all memoir similar to Prince Harry’s book Spare. She said that that isn’t her plan. She’s not in any way thinking about publishing some kind of wild expose about her time in the royal family. However, the door to her writing books is absolutely still open. I think that that is 100% part of her game plan as far as the as ever brand is concerned. When she trademarked the brand, she had everything in there from homeware to tablecloths to candles to jams, all of that stuff. And books were also a big part of it. I think what Megan is hoping to do is kind of take Martha Stewart and Gwyneith Paltro and merge the two of them together and make herself that she wants the Gwyneth Paltroesque levels of fame without the kind of slightly more alternative goopy wellness hacks, but she wants the kind of I guess cache that someone like Martha Stewart holds as being a true verifiable lifestyle guru. That’s what Megan is hoping to achieve. She doesn’t want to promote weird crystal eggs that you put in all kinds of places, but at the same time, she wants to be as glamorous as Gwyneth. She also wants to be as successful as Martha. Remains to be seen whether she’s going to actually achieve that. But I think cookbooks, lifestyle guides, they are all going to be part of her journey moving forward. And even though they might not be a tell all memoir, Megan has proven time and time again that no matter what she is discussing, she will find a way to make a little dig at the royal family at her time within the royal family here or there. So I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that even in a lifestyle guide, even in a cookbook, there could well be opportunity for her to kind of poke the bear as it were. Megan has been here, there, and everywhere. First and foremost, we have her podcast, which has really failed to gain the traction that I think Megan was hoping it would. Effectively, we’ve just seen her repeat the same mistakes that she did with Archetypes. Lots of critics have said that her podcast lacks substance, that it doesn’t offer any kind of interesting learnings, it doesn’t give anything to the listener. But when it comes to Megan appearing as a guest on podcasts, that has been a phenomenal success. I think once again Megan needs to learn that when it comes to her public profile, people don’t want to see her as a brand founder. People don’t want to see her as a businesswoman. People want the inside scoop on Megan, former royal, wife of Prince Harry, mother to Liet and Archie. Not sure whether she’s ever going to follow that route full time, but she is dipping in and out of it. She’s appearing on the IT Cosmetics Founders podcast. She’s opening up about her home life. She’s also appearing at Time 100 events where she’s talking about businesses and how it feels to found a company and all of that kind of stuff. Her social media account is now being updated regularly. We’ve got daily content from her life at home. And I don’t think Megan is going to slow down. For those who weren’t fans of her before she met Prince Harry, or for those who weren’t critics of her before she met Prince Harry, Megan did previously have a fairly successful lifestyle blog called The Tig, where she would post regularly all kinds of content, her favorite wines, trips with her girlfriends, kind of sharing snapshots from there. So, actually, when it comes down to it, I think Megan is actually a prolific poster. She really enjoys sharing perfectly curated glimpses inside her life. And the one thing about social media that I think Megan likes the most is that she has complete control over it. She doesn’t have a say, at least not fully, when it comes to podcast interviews or, you know, interviews with different newspapers or magazines. She doesn’t have the end say about how those pieces are phrased or how they are kind of put across. But when it comes to her social media, she has the final say on what it looks like, what she shares, what she does or doesn’t comment or reply to. And I think for Megan, who has been so eager to kind of gain control over the public narrative of her and Harry’s lives for so long, I think that represents a really safe space for her.
