Here’s why cardinals are banned from eating ravioli during the conclave. Amid the voting to find Pope Francis’s successor, the 135 Catholic cardinals sequestered in the Vatican are following strict rules when it comes to their meals. Cardinal Gian Franco Ravasi of Italy told the New York Times in an article published on May 7th, “You don’t eat very well.” Before Cardinal Lewig Miller adds of the food, “It’s not so good.” And there have been items that are completely forbidden from the menus. Stuffable pastas such as ravioli as well as whole chickens have previously not been condoned for conclave consumption as messages could easily be concealed inside them. Food at the conclaves began to be inspected around the 16th century for secret notes with high security surveillance in the kitchens where meals were prepared for the cardinals. Around the same time in history, cardinals who died amid the conclave were suspected to have done so because of poisoned food. As such, cardinals began taking turns acting as poison testers. And once one cardinal ate food without ailment, the others joined in. Chef Bartomo Scappy, a famed Vatican cook, notes in his written works from the era. However, the cardinals taking part in the current conclave are well aware that they won’t be served up anything special.
