What Happened to American Apparel, Founder Dov Charney | E! News

I was like so in it that I couldn’t even see outside of like anything. American Apparel is under fire for its cultlike allegations by former co-workers who worked under the reigns of founder Dove Charnie in the new documentary Train Wreck, the cult of American Apparel. The brand was founded in 1989 by Dove and exploded in popularity in the mid 2000s. And the Netflix series uncovers many misconduct allegations by former workers, including both sexual and work abuse. So, it was exclusively yelling. I’m going to [ __ ] you over to I’m going to [ __ ] you. He would freak the [ __ ] out like just punch holes in walls or, you know, I watched him smash one of those like wire trash cans just like hitting it against the ground until it was like a smashed soda can. shame on you, you little and then he’d get like inches away from your face and just slap himself. He would like hit himself and say, “I’m hitting myself cuz I can’t hit you.” Like pretty much to the point where he’s like about to bleed. Though denying all allegations at the time, Dove was suspended from American Apparel in June of 2014 and officially terminated at the end of the year. After his termination, Dove founded a new company, Los Angeles Apparel, in 2016, and it remains in business today. Since then, he has been unapologetic, saying at a 2017 Creative Services event, according to California Apparel News, “I am not planning to do anything differently. I’m going to do what I have always done, which is run the show off the seat of my pants. I go by inspiration.” And in an interview shown in the Netflix documentary, what extension of you are we getting now? We’re still getting the same run. I’m not sorry about the documentary says that Dove is also working with Kanye West’s label, Easy. E-News has reached out to Charnie about the misconduct allegations, but has not yet heard back. He repeatedly denied wrongdoing, and as the production noted, lawsuits filed against him by former employees were sent to confidential arbitration. [Music]
