I Know What You Did Last Summer: Jennifer Love Hewitt Reveals Her 1 Requirement For Julie’s Return

You can’t run. You can’t hide. Get them before they get you. I love this movie so much. I thought it was so bad. So much fun. So unexpected. Um I know what you did last summer paired with Scream, I think, completely revitalized the slasher genre. Thank you, Kevin Williamson. Legacy sequels are so great when they’re done right. So what had to be absolutely right for you to come back? What did you need for Julie? I I think for me personally, I needed to know that Julie had not let this go. Um, not in the sense that like she hadn’t moved on and lived a life and, you know, figured out how to function and all those things, but that like in in her person, trauma was always going to be there because I I I wouldn’t have believed it otherwise for her. Um, and so I really wanted to kind of lean into that to see that that time and that that um that trauma had sort of set with her. And also that I think Julie is somebody who has spent 27 years grieving the girl that was on the road that night that never got to continue. Um, and and you know, I wanted to kind of see that in her um, obviously in a in a very quick storytelling of her of her time in the movie. Um, and I feel like we did that and so I was really happy about that. Did you happen to talk to Nev Campbell about doing a legacy sequel? I didn’t. You know what’s funny is at one point I was going to reach out to her and be like, “Let’s have this conversation like how you know how how do you feel about it?” Like what? And then I didn’t. But I um but I’m she’s just like such an icon for me and Jamie Lee um and you know all of the final girls that are out there. Um, I’m so privileged to be in that in that company and that club. Um, and I just root for us all to get to like keep going and coming back. And you know, horror is such an interesting um such an interesting place and that I really feel like it has been the first place that has accepted women as really tough badass characters so easily. But it’s also it’s also now a place that says age, what age? come back, be these characters again, do this. Nobody cares. You know, your character is great. Play your great character. And I love the horror genre for that. I think it’s so powerful. Yeah, that’s such a good point. Um, what are you waiting for? Huh? Is obviously one of the most iconic memeable uh lines that is here to stay. The scary movie parody is just hilarious. Um, what has your journey been like with that line? Like, did you always love it? Was there a point where you were like, “Oh my god, like people are going to say this to me forever.” And like I’ve never gotten tired of it. Um, oddly enough, I I have heard it so many times. My three-year-old now says it daily cuz he’s hearing all this stuff. So just the other day he was standing on the stairs and he goes, “Mommy, I want to go to the park. What are you waiting for?” Huh? And he just like says that it’s these things and now like for dinner he’ll be like, “I’m hungry. What are you waiting for?” Huh? And it’s hilarious. Like literally be on the floor laughing every time. Um, so I love it. Uh, it’s been great. Um, and I just appreciate that there’s a lion that means that much to people out there. It’s so like instead of having like his why face, he’s having a what are you waiting for? What are you waiting for? Huh? I know. And he’s always like playing the fisherman and he’s like, I kill you now, mommy. And I’m like, no, no, no. Julie James says it died. You can’t kill mommy. Um, so it’s very funny. My friend was here the other day. She was like, this is such a disturbing way to play. And I’m like, yeah, well, you know, it’s the phase we’re in. It’s fine. You know what I’m waiting for is a Heartbreaker sequel. It’s something I’ve always wanted. Is that something that you think could ever happen or should I stop asking? Oh my gosh, I would do it in a heartbeat. I would I would love to do it. Um I think it would be really interesting to see my character now as a mom with another, you know, con artist daughter. Um and then obviously Sigourney, you know, still being there, being the boss that she is. Um I would love to do that. I think it would be great. But I also think that they could remake the movie with the totally different people and have that also be amazing. And you’d be cool with that. Yeah. I mean, as long as they let me stop by for a second. Sure. Um, I got to go, but before I let you go, 911, do you know when season one goes into produ or season 9 goes into production? Oh my gosh. Like in a couple weeks. Oh my gosh. Yeah, we’re back in a couple weeks. So, I will be back answering phones and in a totally different trauma than this one, which is great. I love it. Well, congratulations. It was so lovely talking to you. Thank you so much. You too. Could it be cash, a check? [Music]

    3. This is great to hear, as I have always loved Scream but never watched the original I Know What You Did Last Summer until really a few weeks ago and I just have to say, this is great to hear JLH who hasn’t lost a bit of her sex appeal since 1997 whatsoever if I do say so myself, it’s good to hear her say that she hasn’t let the traumatic events towards her character of the 1997 film go.

I won’t go so far as to say she is my favorite 90’s final girl as that definitely goes to Sydney from Scream and I just think Scream overall is a more fun concept and this just feels like a very stock slasher film concept but, not in a bad way at all as I still enjoyed it for what it was and I’m excited to see the legacy sequel Friday night with my mom.
