The Rise of Scarlett Johansson: Highest Grossing Actor EVER
Scarlet is the newly crowned highest grossing actor of all time. Welcome to Miz Mojo and today we’re going through the entire career of Scarlett Johansson, one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood history. Not only is she an Oscar nominated actress, she’s getting behind the camera to direct her first feature film. Plus, she is also a successful entrepreneur. In 2018 and 2019, Johansson became the highest paid actress in the entire world. I think it’s exciting to be uh the only woman in this category. It’s kind of disappointing actually to be the only woman in this category. Um you know that was a little bit of a surprise to me. During the mid 2020s, she also overtook Samuel L. Jackson and became the highest grossing actor in human history. Alongside being one of Marvel’s staple characters for over a decade, she has acted in a ton of blockbusters and is now the face of Jurassic World. We put ourselves in a place where we don’t belong. Survival is a long shot. That’s kind of our specialty. After being a huge nerd for the series for years, it’s a dream come true for Johansson. She didn’t simply become one of Hollywood’s top dogs overnight. Her career has lasted over three decades. During that time, she has been in over 50 movies and has been nominated for over a 100 awards, winning at least 42 of them. This whole awards season has been sort of a whirlwind kind of dream come true and um I I don’t know that I have the words to be able to process it exactly right now. So, how did Johansson achieve all that she has today? The short answer is through hard work and dedication to show business. If you want the long answer, then keep watching. So, you’ve done uh you know like 45 films. You’re the busiest woman in Hollywood. On November 22nd, 1984, Johansson was born in Manhattan, New York. She and her family grew interested in acting from a young age. Yeah. And now I have two big brothers to look out for me. Hey, I know we’re all excited to have North as part of our family, but he hasn’t decided if he wants to stay with us yet. Come on, North. You got to stay. Yeah, we really want you. While she was only seven, one of her siblings landed an agent over her. This upset the young Johansson, who found the auditioning experience highly overwhelming. That didn’t stop her from following her dreams. If anything, it only made her more motivated. I was putting in the leg work. You know what I mean? I was I was, like I said, I was going on a lot of auditions and I was being rejected most of the time. Her parents supported her the whole time, encouraging her to sing and dance for the family frequently. Another technique of hers was to force herself to cry in the mirror, which massively improved her acting abilities. Eventually, she landed herself a place at the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan, which specializes in child actors. When she was only 9 years old, she earned her first paid role on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. It was only a 5-minute sketch, but everyone has to start somewhere. Andy, come on. Of course, she can spell it. All right. She’s a spelling bee champ. That’s right. I’d rather try a harder word. It’s more fun. Over the next couple of years, she got a handful of minor roles in some reasonably high budget movies. In 1996, she nailed her first leading role in Manny and Low. Well, Laurel was one of those people, and I guess Elaine knew it. Anyways, if it wasn’t bugging them, then it wasn’t going to bug me. She was so good, one reviewer said, quote, “She could become an important actress. It wasn’t enough to make her a star. However, she wouldn’t break through until starring in 2001’s Ghost World.” Who could forget this great hit from the 50s? Huh? I feel as though I’ve stepped into a time warp. Hey, check out the awesome 50s hairdo on our radar. Johansson was cast as one of the two main characters of Ghostworld alongside Thora Burch. Based on a ’90s comic, it didn’t light up the box office, but received enough praise to become a cult classic. Oh, this is so bad. It’s almost good. Fortunately for her, she would be propelled into the spotlight in 2003, and she hasn’t left since. She signed on to star alongside Bill Murray in Sophia Copala’s hit movie Lost in Translation. I tried taking pictures, but they’re so mediocre, you know, and every girl goes through a photography phase, you know, like horses. It had a relatively small budget of $4 million, but made almost $119 million at the box office. Although cast when she was 17 and just shy of 19 when the film came out, Johansson received praise for how well she played an older character. In the same year, she also played the main character in Girl with a Pearl Earring, which was less successful but still highly acclaimed. The industry was so impressed she got two nominations for the BAFTA for best actress. This gave her a 40% chance of winning a BAFTA, which she did for Lost in Translation. Let’s never come here again cuz it would never be as much fun. Whatever you say, you’re the boss. By this point, she had established herself as one of her generation’s greatest actors. She continued to act in huge Hollywood blockbusters like the Spongebob Squarepants movie in 2004, where she voiced Mindy, Neptune’s daughter. A dream of hers to work with Woody Allen was fulfilled in 2005 when they worked together on Match Point. It’s cuz you love me and you don’t love her. Is that your interpretation? It’s a child conceived out of genuine passion, not as part of some fertility project. During this era, she also worked alongside Michael Bay and Christopher Nolan. So, she might not have been unanimously considered a household name by the late 2000s. In the early 2010s, almost everyone knew her. By 2010, she had a reputation for being a diverse actress with a plethora of talents. This helped her make her Broadway debut in 2010. Starring in A View from the Bridge, Johansson won a Tony Award. In the same year, her career changed forever when she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You’re fired. That’s not up to you. Tony, I want you to meet Agent Romangh. Hi. I’m a shield shadow. Once we knew you were ill, I was tasked by Dr. Fury. Johansson first took on the role of Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and has appeared in eight films since. Black Widow even got her own prequel movie in 2021, which also served as a sendoff for Natasha Romangh. You get as far away from here as possible. You get to make your own choices. Now, when the film was released both in cinemas and on streaming services, it prompted a legal battle between Johansson and Disney. It was settled out of court and on the bright side, they’re still on good terms with Johansson becoming executive producer for Thunderbolts. Fans are desperate for her return, which fuels tons of rumors. Johansson has said multiple times she’ll never repraise the role, but that doesn’t stop diehard fans. The last 5 years I’ve been trying to do one thing, get to right here. That’s all it’s been about. Bringing everybody back. Now, don’t you get all decent on me now. Well, you think I want to do it? I’m trying to save your life, you idiot. Now, the gap has been filled by Black Widow’s adopted sister, Yolena Bova, portrayed by Florence Pew. Okay, assignment is Oh, wait. Hang on. [Music] Assignment is complete. What’s next? Black Widow wasn’t her sole role during her Marvel years. One of her most critically acclaimed works was Under the Skin in 2013, an exceptionally artsy film to put it mildly. Johansson played the lead character, a bizarre alien wandering around Glasgow. Like Ghostworld, it didn’t pack theaters, but that didn’t stop it from earning huge praise. I noticed you looking at me before. I liked it. More lucrative roles for Johansson included her and Lucy. The former was nominated in five separate categories at the Academy Awards. But what makes me me is my ability to grow through my experiences. So basically in every moment I’m evolving just like you. The latter was much more polarizing, earning recognition for the acting and visuals, but the plot was considered gibberish by many viewers. Cells group together forming a giant web of communication, which in turn forms matter. Cells get together, take on one form, deform, reform, makes no difference. It’s all the same. She later joined Wes Anderson for a couple of movies, starred in both Singh films, and controversially played the lead character in Ghost in the Shell. While her performance wasn’t bad, the character she played was Japanese, which became a major source of criticism. Johansson rebounded at the 2020 Academy Awards when she was nominated for both best actress and best supporting actress, a feat few have achieved. The former was for Marriage Story, then the latter for Jojo Rabbit. Both are considered some of her finest works ever. It’s because of you. My son can’t walk properly and has a messed up face. He stole my hang just to Yeah. Yeah. So, you are going to look after him while I’m at work? Make sure he has a job and feels included. Got it. Got it. Of course, acting isn’t the only thing Johansson has done with her life. She’s also released a decent amount of music. Her first album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, was released in 2008 and impressively featured David Bowie. Falling down. Only one track was original with the rest being Tom Weight’s covers. It didn’t impress everyone. A reception shared by her second album, Breakup, from 2009, created alongside Pete Yorn. The pair most recently released an EP in 2018. [Music] Philanthropy is another focus. Across her career, she has supported at least 30 charities and even became a global ambassador for Oxfam in 2005. Unfortunately, she didn’t keep the role for long. In 2014, she stepped down after promoting SodaStream, an Israeli company with factories in the occupied West Bank. That is potentially her biggest controversy, but it doesn’t discount the millions she’s raised. Politics is another interest of hers. Young America, why are we only speaking with half our voice when so many issues at stake here directly affect us? She’s campaigned for multiple Democratic presidential candidates and is a massive supporter of feminism. No judgment, no questions asked. Planned Parenthood provided a safe place where I could be treated with gentle guidance. Somehow she managed to fit in time to raise a family. She’s been married three times, currently to Colin Jo, and is raising two children. Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos. Johansson has solidified herself as a titan of Hollywood. Things are likely to keep improving for her as she’ll likely star in new Jurassic World movies and is even starting to direct. I can guarantee your safety. I mean, more or less. More or less. Her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, premiered at the Can Film Festival in May 2025 and received reasonably positive reviews. I really got lucky with the timing of this film because in not so many years, I think it would be less possible. She also owns her own production company called These Pictures, so expect more films from her. At this point, she could comfortably retire early, but when she holds so much passion for her craft, why would she bother? I think for me it felt like a it was kind of a seamless transition because I’m working with actors which I love to do as as an actor. What’s your favorite Scarlett Johansson role? She's talented but come on .!
I remember rewatching "Home Alone 3" with my little cousins, and being surprised when Scarlett Johansson was the main character's sister, though she merely had a supporting role.
My boo ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Mindy from The Spongebob Squarepants Movie. 😍
Scarlett is an amazing actress! 💕
I’ve been a fan of Scarlett Johansson ever since her debut as Black Widow. Also, I became impressed by her role as Elita One from Transformers One.
Edit – I can’t praise a person when they defend a child S predator like Woody Allen. Just found out she does so editing this comment
You mean ACTRESS?
You forgot The Horse Whisperer! With Robert Redford!
She was not cute when she started. Good to know everyone has an ugly FaZe
You forgot "Home Alone 3" 😉
I adore Bill Murray and Lost in Translation is not even her very first role, their chemistry was phenomenal together as intimate friends with no sexuality involved. Sophia Coppola’s masterpiece. She was also in the Horse whisperer and underrated Indie classic Ghost World with Thor’s Birch and Steve Bucsemi❤
Nike targeting Troy Bolton before GTA6 🤍
Favorite: many to choose from, but Lost in Translation. First one I saw, fell in love.
Why are we avoiding female versions of words?
Scarlett Johansson is a legend and she's been everything North, Ghost World, Lost in Translation, and The MCU and voiced in The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie, The Jungle Book 2016, Her, Sing 1-2, Isle of Dogs, and Transformers One she's deserves it all 😊😊😊😊
The island is one of my favorites and the marvel movies

Kaiba is that one guy in the group who's way too chilled for this duel. 😂
The Perfect Scorr and Ghost World is great – Rip Brad Renfro.
Actress not Actor.
Makes Elizabeth Taylor's salary demand of $1 million dollars for her work on "Cleopatra" look like chump change!
I remember her from The Horse Whisperer. She seemed so young pure and innocent in that role. Reminds me of my youth. But I absolutely loved her in Black Widow. She did a good job producing it as well. ❤
The same Scarlett Johansson who defended Wood Allen when asked about his assault claims from his daughter. This is what she said: Johansson makes it clear that she disagrees with many of her peers. “I love Woody,” she says. “I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.” "He maintains his innocence, and I believe him.” She is truly disgusting!
That’s incredible!
I’m a little disappointed that her first leading movie role in Robert Redford’s “The Horse Whisperer” wasn’t mentioned. That was the first movie of hers I saw.
Scarlett is just so talented! She has played a wide variety of parts and has been good at all of them! I'm glad she got away from the controlling Ryan Reynolds and is now with her wonderful Colin. He is a keeper!
The "Ghost in the Shell" character was NOT Japanese. It was an android, ffs.
Her eyes were 5 times normal human size.
At the risk of "sounding" racist, overly large eyes are not a stereotypical Japanese trait.
