“It’s A Joymaking Show” – Sandra Oh On Shakespeare In The Park’s “Twelfth Night”

Hold on one second. Hey everybody, we’re back with the one and only Sandra. Oh, as I said, you’re spending the summer in New York City because you’re doing Shakespeare in the park, 12th night at the Delicort Theater in Central Park. Um, have you performed at the Delicort before? Um, not performed, but I did uh I think the 50th uh reading of uh Romeo and Juliet. Okay. Amazing. It’s an amazing space which has been renovated over the last 18 months. What? I haven’t I haven’t been in yet, but Yeah. Yeah. It’s fantastic. It’s in It’s It’s fantastic. It’s brand new. Um and you know, it’s outside Shakespeare in the Park. It’s It’s something that is so specific and special to New York City and also because it’s free. That’s right. What I love it, you can have the greatest actor in the world doing like Prospero’s piece from the Tempest and he gets upstaged by a stork flying by or a raccoon. Come come to see a raccoon upstage Jesse Tyler Ferguson which is very hard to do to upstage. You performed you at the at the fully renovated reopening this past was this past year? Yes. Okay. You did a you did a little solo. Do we have this gem? Oh, all the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances. And one man or woman in her time plays many parts. What you will, what will you That is one of the That’s one of the best Well, Olivia’s got a lot of great lot of great moments in this. What does that mean? That is a philosophical I I’ve been really thinking about this a lot because something like our great writers you know you can in times of difficulty there’s great meaning and great solace in it and I mean of course you know in the in it’s that Jake’s jaqu speech from um as you like it. So in in it he’s just basically talking like here we are you and I here’s this show you know we are just players upon this stage and there are exits and entrances and we play many parts. So where you are in your life right now the next part of where you’re going to be it is what you will and what will you meaning like it all depends on what we decide to do in this moment. What will you that’s a good question that he poses and so I was really really so happy to to to be able to say that speech on the opening of the the delicacort. You know what it reminds me is that often I think the problem today is no one’s asking the question what won’t you what do you mean what won’t you bring yourself to do to stay correct you know in power what won’t you what is there something you could not bring yourself to do or else you wouldn’t be yourself anymore because I see so many people disappearing into acquiescence and that’s such a strange thing to see out of people who otherwise had good ideas. Yes. So what will you what you will what will you I mean just to even contemplate on those two two two sentences again and again for ourselves for those who are in power what you will you know but what will you that’s for all of us to kind of consider well uh first time doing Shakespeare in the park yeah um which which can I just say it will be aired for free on PBS Yes. In November. In November. Right. So, it’s it’s Yeah. Right. So, yeah. It’s last that long. Well, May May it I’m everyone just donate to PBS right now, please. Yeah. We all need another tote bag. Okay. Um, so the cast includes you, Lupita and Yongo, Peter Dinklage, Jesse Tyler Ferguson. It’s an incredible cast. Look at that thing right there. Did you had you had you worked with any of these people before? No. No. It’s my first time and it and it’s just so joyous. We It’s a It’s a joy making show. Please come. You’ll enjoy it. Okay. That’s us with a a fourth folio. Oh, it was amazing. Of Shakespeare. Oh, Shakespeare. All of his work. They’ve been up from the folder or something like that. No. Uh no, I don’t know what it what it was for where they got it. It was from some really rich person’s house. Yeah, we got those in New York. We got those in New York. Um, last time, last time we were here, we talked about that you had uh uh clown training. Oh, yes. Clown training. Yes. Did you have Shakespearean training? You know, at the National Theater School in Canada, you know, our capsule for Shakespeare, the the the the period of time you’d study Shakespeare. Yes. Like that I think it was eight or eight or 12 week period. The the the teacher was sick. So, we just got more clown. Okay. Your birthday was last week. Congratulations. No, it was yesterday. It was? Yeah. All right. I didn’t know that. Happy happy one day. Blay. Did you do anything? What did you do to celebrate? I had a perfect New York day. I went to the Met to see the Sergeant exhibits. Sure. And then I strolled through uh um Central Park. Had a little picnic and then I had beautiful dinner at uh Ouiji. Ouiji, which is a beautiful Korean restaurant. Wow. Fantastic. Do people leave Sandra O alone? Can you picnic in the park without a business going, “Hey, it’s Oh, you want No, no. Um, well, I’m not going to tell you how I do it.” Uh, but yes. Yes. Mask work. Mask work. So, I’m just like this the entire time. Well, Sandra, thank you so much for being here. Lovely to have you on again. Performances of 12th Night begin August 7th at the Delicort Theater here in New York, New York. It’s Sandra O. Everybody, we’ll be right back with Dave Franco.

    1. Free will, what do you wish for yourself? Will you??? If you really really knew, you would wish for nothing, because truth would reveal itself to you then, so, remember, all thoughts are energy generating ideas. Go to the sonnets… “ no man has ever loved “ nor truly been alive. Only now do we exist, projecting ourselves into an imaginary world will only give illusory projection, illusions of your own making. Imagine??? Yes or No= free will. I desire only to know God in Heaven.

    3. I will admit President Trump was wrong about one item.
I and other great Americans will never be tired of winning! Keep going Mr. Trump. You’re doing an excellent job!

    4. 2:36 "I think the problem today is no one's asking the question 'What won't you?'. What won't you bring yourself to do stay in power/still be yourself. I see too many disappearing into acquiescence" Damn, Stephen. Yeah, drawing a line is also an important way of defining yourself, and we're definitely not seeing enough people do that. That reminds me of this quote: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing".

    5. It's about time somebody realized this man is not funny this man is a threat to American democracy this man is anti-American and loves men in women sports

    7. Oh Sandra, I love you but I must correct you: Free Shakespeare in the Park is NOT specific to NYC! Buffalo, NY has Shakespeare in Delaware Park, founded by the late great Saul Elkin, now currently celebrating it's 50th Season!!!!

    8. What say you? Why will you? Went not to what we will be as I be not what I was in this quest to be. What won't you want not to will yourself to be? We must consider the willingness to be.
