Sweet. If anyone does not know Vanessa Redgrave recognised the plight of Palestine way back in the 1960s when many Westerners would not even think of questioning Zionism or supporting occupied people in the global south. She remortgaged her house to make a documentary film called The Palestinian (1977). She faced enormous attack from pro-Israel orgs and had little to no support from her peers.
“a brutal, racist ideology and a brutal racist regime that was not built to protect anyone” she said of the Zionist project.
Vanessa understood what the colonial entity represented back then and she showed that white western supremacy was something she was wholeheartedly willing to oppose. Vanessa is now 88 years old and I am sure it broke her heart to see the consequences of so few people listening to Palestinians decade after decade. At least she knows we are all at least listening now even though the fight for liberation goes on with no end in sight.
