American Eagle Breaks Silence on Controversial Sydney Sweeney Jeans Add | E! News

American Eagle is speaking out. The clothing company which sparked controversy with its ad campaign starring Sydney Sweeney has addressed the backlash from critics claiming the company was promoting eugenics by using a play on the word jeans. American Eagle wrote in an Instagram statement August 1st. Sydney Sweeney has great jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence their way. Great jeans look good on everyone. And last month, even a staff person of the White House spoke out about the conversations surrounding the ad with director of communications Stephven Chung writing on ex July 29th, “Cancel culture run a mock.” For her part, Sydney has mostly avoided the crossfire, only sharing a single post from the campaign to her Instagram grid and otherwise posting her typical content of her pups and day-to-day activities. The ads, which were first released July 23rd, featured Sweeney as well as her German Shepherd, Sully Bear, and videos and photos of her dawning the brand’s denim that appeared very sexualized, with one video even seeing the star joke as the camera panned down her body. A major critique of the campaign has been that it appealed to men to sell women’s jeans. Though the campaign featured both men and women’s clothing, as one social media user wrote on American Eagle’s July 23rd Instagram, “This was not the move AE. we needed and wanted something different as women. Meanwhile, others took note of the brand using a play on words Sydney Sweeney has great jeans, swapping the final word for jeans. Since Sweeney is white, blonde, and blue-eyed, the latter of which was playfully pointed out in one now deleted version of the ad. Some accused the brand of promoting eugenics and Nazi propaganda. Others on social media found the ad too reminiscent of a 1980s Calvin Klein ad starring Broo Shields that also used the same homophone and similarly sparked controversy. Shields, who was just 15 when she shot the ad, later told Vogue in 2021 she felt naive for doing it. Steel Shields admitted that she remains somewhat proud of the iconic ad campaign, which remains a reference in pop culture to this day. She added to Vogue, “The controversy backfired. The campaign was extremely successful and then the underwear overtook the jeans. And this isn’t the first time Sweeney herself has bubbled up discourse for an ad campaign either. Many of her fans had polarizing reactions to Sweeney signing on to promote a limited run of Dr. Squash soap featuring her own bathwater back in June. Sweeney told ENews of the idea at the time, declining to say anything else about it. I pitched it. I think it’s more fun to see everyone else talk about it. [Music]

After American Eagle faced a slew of backlash for Sydney Sweeney’s “good jeans” ad, the company issued a statement.

    1. Oh the parodies are absolutely hilarious. Like the part she buttons up her jeans while shes lying in bed, there was a take where the clone sweeney says 'i just got done taking a massive dump'. I thought that was pretty funny. Its all in good fun, but if youre trying to boycot a company and thats the intent of these parodies, theyre doing a terrible job at it.

    2. Why nobody talk about David Beckham’s Calvin Klein underwear ad? He is white, potraying beauty standards for men bla…bla…bla…which is the Calvin’s market target. I think similar happens in American Eagle here, they are targeting white American teenagers as their market. Is it racism? Maybe yes, maybe not

    3. After 10+ years of commercials featuring obese women while suggesting that we are supposed to find them attractive, this American Eagle commercial is a breath of fresh air.

    4. I love the ads with Sweeney. I'm a mixed breed, with olive skin, brown eyes and black hair. I am not triggered by blonde haired, blue eyed folks. I find the controversy over this, disingenuous, and ridiculous.

    5. YouTube is picking and choosing what comments they want posted in other words they seem to be left-wing biased. While others seem to be able to post whatever they want against Republicans. Very communist.
If you see an inappropriate comment, don’t dare report on it because then they’ll just follow you constantly or that’s what it seems like and apparently I’m not the only one.

    6. “If it is not a black fat trans then it is wrong “ : woke sense. I love my generation of weak “victims” getting distracted with everything that is not relevant, important or even real.
