Smartphones are the new malls. You can buy products on one page and hang out with friends on another. Welcome to a digital dystopia where social interaction is primarily conducted through technology. Even in the malls, people are on their smartphones.

I don’t think that many teenagers nowadays visit Claire’s when they have Temu and Shein at home. The quality of most accessories is probably about the same.

Gee I wonder why all the people hoarding all the money aren’t shopping at Claire’s more?

I worked at Claire’s corporate back in the 2010s for 6 years. It was a wild place to work.
Truly some of the meanest, nastiest people I’ve ever encountered. Working on fun product also while working 12 hour days for no money.

I would love to see mall culture just slightly pivot. I would love to see my local mall to turned into something like a small city’s downtown area. Post office, grocery store, playground, pharmacy, movies, restaurants with “outdoor” (very open spaced) seating, small concerts, shows, community events etc.. The summers are unbearable, severe weather is getting more severe and I don’t see it getting better any time soon (especially with this shit storm of an administration).

I went to Claire’s for the first time in like 20 years to get some stuff for my niece. The prices are ridiculous. Its dollar store products marked up to whatever comes out of their ass. Like cheap plastic purses for $50, headbands were $12.. you can get this stuff anywhere for less than a quarter of the price.

Was in the mall
Today with my daughter and it was so crowded with teens and families doing back to school shopping.

It’s weird to read about the death of mall culture because the big malls in my western Canadian hometown are always busy when I go in.
Unless someone’s sprayed a fuckton of bear spray out in the food court of course…

Malls could see a revival if they actually tried making them appealing instead of immediately succumbing to online shopping.
If they got rid of the blue toned lighting and insane unlistenable spotify playlist music it would make the experience much less overstilmulating they could become a staple once again

cant help but wonder if it’s because of the ever-disappearing ‘pre-teen’ stage of childhood in girls. granted i haven’t been to a claire’s in like… 15 years (OUCH!), but last i was there it was aimed towards that age group. i’m sure you guys can find a post that’s more eloquently put, but i can’t help but feel like a small part of it (other than bad business decisions on the part of the company) is how quick social media is pushing girls to grow up.

I think I’m the last remaining Claire’s stan, only because in my local mall it’s the best place to get cheap body jewelry. Spencer’s stuff always goes green and smelly but Claire’s doesn’t for me, and the kiosks you see in the middle of the mall just don’t hit the same. I grew up in that mid-2000s era of furry sparkly pink everything though, so I’m totally biased. It just sucks seeing everything slowly get replaced by the same old beige stuff.
ETA: also I don’t disagree that online shopping is more convenient, but there’s something so nostalgic about flip flopping around a big tile expanse from shop to shop, carrying a Booster Juice, imagining yourself in the ridiculous mannequin displays, peoplewatching!!! I can’t get enough of it, especially if there’s some sort of pretzel shop nearby filling the air with salty buttery goodness
