I was just too much for me to handle. Why would they need a prenuptual agreement? They were in love. JLo filed for the big D on August 20th, 2024. After 2 years of marriage, so how did we get here? Today, we’re breaking down the messy, ugly, untold divorce of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. The tabloid darlings reconnected 20 years after their first fling, only for it to blow up all over again. JLo and Ben first met in 2001 on the set of their film Gely. She was still married to her second husband, Chris Jud, who was one of her background dancers. Jen and Ben started dating in 2002, but there were already rumors that they were hooking up on the set of Jely while she was still married to Chris Jud. In August 2002, Jennifer denied it in an interview with Readers Digest. So, I have to confess, I actually like Jie. Their chemistry palpable. It’s turkey time. Huh? Cobble gobble. But when the movie came out in 2003, it was the stinker of the summer. Best part of Jileie, Alpacuccino is somehow in this movie. How did I get in this movie? In April 2002, Jennifer Lopez opens a restaurant in Pasadena and Chris Jud, her husband at the time, is there. But then in classic Tel Nolla style, Inwoks Ben Affleck with flowers to congratulate her. This was so emasculating for Chris Jud, who’s already a backup dancer. Sure, Chris Jud was the appetizer, but Ben Affleck, he was the entree. A few months later, JLo and Chris Jud were over. He walks away with $14 million because lo and behold, they didn’t have a prenup. During that period, 2001 to 2003, Jenny from the block was blowing up. And that is the worst possible time to be married in a marriage that’s going to be unsuccessful because the assets that were acquired during the marital period from the date of marriage to the date of filing for divorce are all in play. And then pop culture history is made. Bennifer is coined. It’s like their two names are just dry humping on a couch and everyone is obsessed with these two. In September 2002, JLo released her famous video Jenny from the Block and her leading man was none other than Ben Affleck. There’s paparazzi shooting them. It’s a part of a storyline and the video is pretty steamy. He’s rubbing her famous derriè. By November 2002, Ben is proposing to Jen. JLo then officially announced that she was engaged to Ben Affleck in a big sitdown interview with Diane Sawyer. It was the best day of my life. Look, Jennifer Lopez is a hopeless romantic. She gets married to anyone she wants. We should be surprised she never married Puff Daddy. Remember that? Yeah. By the end of this year, she drops an album called This Is Me dot dot dot. Then it’s all about her love for Ben. There’s even a song on the album called Dear Ben about how perfect he is and how much she loves him. She’s putting her personal life into her art and it doesn’t totally jive with Ben Affleck’s thing. This will eventually come to bite her in that big beautiful ass. Then on September 10th, 2003, Lopez and Affleck released a joint statement that they were postponing their wedding due to paparazzi. Sure, they’re under a lot of pressure, but is it really giving you cold feet, or is there something else going on? So, case in point, Ben is filming a movie in Montreal in 2003, and he goes to a strip club. He’s partying with Christian Slater, Tara Reed. Those are your first two signs this is not going to go well. Ben reportedly doesn’t behave himself and has a little bit too much fun with not one, not two, not three, but four strippers. One of the exotic dancers, Tammy Morris, alleged that she didn’t just strip for Ben, but they fullon had sex and that cheating was involved. So, Jen reportedly catches wind of this and she’s not happy. And by January 2004, the engagement is called off. In the eyes of the law, Ben and Jennifer, their first time together is the day they said, “I do.” the fact that people lived together, that they were previously engaged, none of that is relevant in deciding what their respective rights and obligations are in terms of the division of assets or anything else. All that matters is the date of marriage and the date of filing for divorce. Just 6 months after officially splitting from Ben, Jennifer marries Mark Anthony, the Latin music superstar, and they’re actually together for several years afterwards. They have two kids together. It seems like Jennifer has gotten it right this time. But in 2012, Mark Anthony files for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. That is common. That’s the no fault basis that people file when they don’t want to start casting, you know, slings and arrows at each other. It’s the easiest and least controversial way to file. Years go by and by 2019, Jennifer has found love once again with former Yankee superstar Alex Rodriguez. They looked like Ken and Barbie every time they stepped out of the house. Gorgeous couple. And they got engaged, but they never got married. Meanwhile, what’s Ben been up to? He marries Jennifer Garner, star of Alias on TV, Electra on the big screen, and they got married in 2005. They end up having three kids together, and they are married until 2015. And it all seems low-key much more private than the Bennifer thing. But after they break up, Jennifer does decide to speak to Vanity Fair. She basically says, “When Ben likes you, you feel the love, but when he doesn’t like you, he casts a shadow.” So, at this point in the late 201s, both Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are single and kind of flirty. When Jen was starring in Hustlers, which was getting Oscar buzz, Ben jumped on that and said his ex should have been nominated for an Oscar and said that she was baller to have this peak moment in her career at the age of 50. Meanwhile, Jen was also gushing kind of about Ben, saying that the reason they broke up was because of the paparazzi. Definitely not what happened in Montreal. And then boom, summer 2021, Bennifer 2.0 happens. So in July of that summer, JLo posts a picture of them on a yacht, so you know it’s on. They’re kissing. Ben and Jen brought their rekindled romance to the Met Gala on September 13th where they were kissing on the red carpet. Ask and all. Fast forward to February 2022. The couple attended the premiere of JLo’s new film, Marry Me, then popped the question two months later. He proposes in a bathtub. Sounds romantic, but also sounds very challenging. In July 2022, the couple hit up Sin City where they said I do in Vegas. And one month later, they had a big wedding with their family. August 2022, they’re in Italy on their honeymoon. They’re looking so in love. A few months later, November, she actually takes his name, which is like no one’s calling her Jennifer Affleck, but it’s a nice gesture. By the start of 2023, they move in together. They go to the Grammys together in February, except Ben looks like he would rather be anywhere else and he actually seems so miserable he becomes a meme. And she has to then do some damage control. She posts a picture a screenshot of his film air and she’s like, “Look, he always looks this way. He he is resting Benface.” On Valentine’s Day 2023, the couple revealed new tattoos. JLo had an affinity sign with both of their names and Ben Affleck had crossing arrows with their initials. This is all very basic and corny, but it’s definitely putting their love out there once again, and it’s certainly better than Ben’s giant dragon back tattoo. So, 2024 turns out to be Jennifer Lopez’s worst year ever. She releases a new album called This Is Me dot dot dot now. And she also releases two films that go along with the album. One is a big budget, self- financed, star-studded narrative film using the album’s music, and the other is a behind-the-scenes documentary about what inspired her to make this album. And it’s called The Greatest Love Story Never Told. And in it, she shares very personal letters that Ben Affleck sent her. And it turns out that collection of love letters was used as inspiration for the album. Ben is mortified by this. said, “Okay, you you’ve been showing all the musicians all the letters that uh” and they were like, “Yeah, we call you Pen Affleck.” And I was like, “Oh my god, you can’t stop Jennifer Lopez from being a publicity monster.” And even Ben admits to that. Getting back together, I said, “Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media.” And then I sort of realized it’s not a fair thing to ask. So, as things start to crumble, sources told Page Six, Jennifer has a kind of big love that can never be matched by someone like Ben, who has a darkness about him, and that even Jennifer Garner couldn’t fix it after, you know, 8 years of marriage. Jen and Ben are not seen in public together in April and May. And JLo shows up to the biggest red carpet alone, the Met Gala. That same month, Jennifer Lopez likes a post on Instagram about unhealthy relationships. that basically says you cannot build a healthy relationship with someone who lacks integrity and emotional safety. It’s not going well. In June 2024, Ben moved out of the Beverly Hills mansion the couple shared and JLo cancelled her world tour. Live Nation says it’s to spend time with family, but we all know it’s because no one had bought any tickets. The next month, Jen throws a 55th birthday party that’s Bridgetgerton themed. What? And Ben is of course not there. And on that same day, they both have huge real estate transactions. She sells her New York City apartment and he buys an LA house. These two are done. August 20th, 2024, JLo filed for divorce on the second anniversary of their marriage. Usually, when someone files on an anniversary, it’s to send a message about, “All right, we made it this far. No further. Here’s my anniversary gift to you.” And despite both these superstars being worth millions of dollars, there was no prenup. Stars, they’re just like us. They sometimes think, you know what? It doesn’t matter that this didn’t work out before. This time it’s real and this time we’re in love and why would we ruin the romance by having a prenuptual agreement. Although the details of their settlement were confidential, it’s rumored that essentially it was a walk away deal and the parties both went on with their lives. Looks like the only thing that JLo got out of this was the resumption of using her name and removing Affleck from. So, what are Ben and Jen up to now? It seems like Ben has found some happiness. He’s starring in The Accountant series and he’s doing what he loves most, appearing in Dunkin Donuts commercials. JLo, she’s focusing on herself these days. She’s also back to work. She recently premiered her latest film, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, at Sundance. After 20 years, four marriages, a couple extra engagements, Jen has found her happy place. She said, “Being in a relationship can’t define me. I can’t be looking for happiness in other people.” I don’t know about you, but I feel like I just went to therapy. Thanks, Jen.
