‘Severance’ star Tramell Tillman on historic Emmy nom, coming out as gay

Girl, you going to make me cry. Don’t cry. You going to make me cry. Oh my. Oh, you going to be crying. Severance’s breakout star Trel Tilman’s mom was his first call when he got the news that he was Emmy nominated for his role in the Apple TV series. And yep, she’s going to be the mysterious Mr. Milchic’s Emy’s date next month. But it was a different conversation with his mother years ago that has people talking as revealed in his variety cover story. On a road trip with his mom in his 20s, he came out to her initially as bisexual to which she awkwardly said, “Well, how’s that going for you?” She worried his sexuality would ruin his career and lead to him being black ballalled and pigeonholed. Treml, now 40, is the first openly gay black man to be recognized in the Emmys category for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series. Of his historic nomination, he told CNN he’s gobsmacked. Tremal grew up in Maryland in a deeply religious Baptist home. He said his childhood was about survival and learned to hide behind performing. I’m always a little jealous when people talk about their first crush or first kiss. I don’t remember those. In the end, his deeply religious mom came around telling him, “Anyone you bring home, I will embrace him as my son.” And Mama Tilman isn’t his only big fan, as he revealed in this Page Six exclusive. Matter of fact, fun fact, the Obamas are fans of Severance, so that was a crowning achievement for me. Did they comment on your dance moves? I don’t know. I’ve not seen it, but I if I run into him, I will ask. Can’t wait to see if he takes home Emmys gold. The 77th Prime Time Emmy Awards will air September 14th on CBS and Paramount Plus.

After being Emmy-nominmated, the breakout star of AppleTV+’s hit series opened up about his success — and coming out to his mom years ago — in a new Variety cover story. Tillman, 40, is now the first openly gay black man to be recognized in Emmys category for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards air on CBS on Sunday, September 14.
