Honestly, it was dated when it came out. Having a man play a trans woman when so many trans women are trying to break out was a criticism at the time.

I may be incorrect but wasn’t there always criticisms of this film regarding casting & representation (maybe not by mainstream critics but there def was some pushback)? Further, if memory serves me, Weinstein was a big backer of this film & it’s whole awards run so……🧍🏾♀️

Has anyone seen all the performances that were nominated for best supporting actress?
I remember not being wowed by her acting, but it was a very slow year if I remember correctly

I don’t understand why we can still not cast the right people for the right roles. It was already dated then and it made me not enjoy the film fully, knowing someone else could have played the role with much more understanding and authenticity.

I don’t know, but she should have won the Oscar for Ex Machina in that year.
And Eddie Redmayne’s performance was so cliché. Her role was the main character in this movie.

I haven’t seen The Danish Girl but I’m curious if its trans representation is better or worse than Emilia Perez

I mean, Danish Girl (2015) was one of the main talking points for the “cis actors playing trans characters” debate. If you take a look at Dallas Buyers Club (2013), it had way less backlash, even if it came out just two years before.
Or the TV Show Transparent. It was lauded in 2014, but felt slightly uncomfortable to praise after 2016. (And is now kinda forgotten).
So in a way Danish Girl is extremely dated, but important learning point in movie casting history.

Def should have been a trans woman but I think Eddie did an amazing job

I remember “protesting” this film.
Eddie Redmayne made a terrible decision and I actually am thankful in a way bc this was one year before Fantastic Beasts came out and his transphobic decision lead me to finally being able to full sever any nostalgic love I had for Harry Potter and that fandom.

When I first saw this film I genuinely thought it was autogynephilia propaganda.
