The 2009 MTV VMAs delivered us one of the most infamous moments in pop culture history. 16 years ago, what started as an enchanted evening that included Taylor Swift arriving in a horsedrawn carriage ended in one of the most awkward award show moments ever. A then 19-year-old Taylor had just won her first Moonman for best female video for her hit You Belong With Me. when Kanye West approached the stage, uttering these now infamous words. Taylor, I I’m really happy for you. I’m let you finish. Kanye claiming Beyonce deserved to win. As the rapper exited the stage to booze from the crowd, Taylor would later reveal in her 2020 documentary Miss Americana, she thought the noise was directed at her. For someone who’s built their whole belief system on getting people to clap for you, the whole crowd booing is a pretty formative experience. Beyonce later accepted her win for video of the year at the end of the night and graciously let Taylor have her moment. After the show, Swift told reporters in footage captured by Entertainment Tonight, “I don’t know him.” of Kanye, adding, “And I don’t want to start anything.” However, one of the most talked about celebrity feuds had already begun. The bad blood went on for years despite West later apologizing to Taylor and Taylor later presenting him with the 2015 Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs. Well, things took a drastic turn when Kanye released his song Famous in 2016, which included a lyric about Taylor. The feud reignited between Taylor and Kanye. Plus, his then wife Kim Kardashian offered a differing account of events regarding whether or not the line was given Taylor’s stamp of approval. Since then, there’s been more eras of drama involving the two, but we’ll never forget the VMA’s moment that started it all. [Music]
