Is Howard Stern retiring? Breaking down all the rumors — and what his bosses say
Is Howard Stern retiring or not? Well, if you ask his bosses, they’re all aboard the Howard train. The rumors swirled all summer long, including one shocking report from the Daily Mail claiming that it was all a desperate hoax from the Howard Stern Show itself to seem relevant again. But this week, the president of Sirius XM, Scott Greenstein, had nothing but good things to say about his star. At a Bank of America conference, he called the 71-year-old radio legend the best interviewer out there. period, bar none, and credited him for being a lightning rod for the satellite radio cause. As for those nasty retirement claims, Scott said negotiation talks are nothing new. We’ve been pretty lucky all these years. We’d love them to stay. It certainly has to make sense, but we feel pretty good that we’ve done this before and we’ll see where it goes. SiriusXM CEO Jennifer Witz agreed, saying Stern has been core to their platform for over 20 years, and she’s confident they’ll get to the right place. The Shock Jock’s current deal is up in the fall, reportedly a 5-year contract valued at 100 million per year. Adding to the tension, Sirius’s newest star, Caller Daddy host, Alex Cooper, landed a mega deal worth $125 million. A source told the US son that there’s no way Sirius can keep paying Howard’s salary and warned it could all go down like Steven Colbear and CBS. The late show is ending in 2026. Howard was supposed to address the chatter on the air on the Tuesday after Labor Day, but cancelled last minute due to a family emergency, although just days before he was seen rocking out at the Metallica show in the Hamptons. It’ll all come to light when the Howard Stern Show finally returns from summer hiatus on Monday, September 8th.
