Why Downton Abbey’s Matthew Goode Is Not in Final Movie | E! News
Well, it looks like we’re saying goodbye to more than just the Crawley family in Downtown Abbey the grand finale. Months after it was first revealed that actor Matthew Good wouldn’t be returning as Henry Tolbood in the franchise’s final film, we’re now learning how his character was written out of Lady Mary’s Life for Good. As the movie premieres in theaters September 12th, fans are shocked to find out that Henry has been cheating on Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, and that the couple have gotten divorced. With creator Julian Fellows telling out TV Line, “Mary has always been something of a winner all the way through, and suddenly it’s gone against her, and she’s a kind of loser. I felt that was good for us and good for Michelle.” Matthew portrayed Lady Mary’s race car driving love interest for the last two seasons of the hit British drama and briefly appeared in the first Downtown to Nabi film. However, he was noticeably absent from the second movie Down to Nabi a new era. With Julian going on to tell TV Line for Matthew once he done the series I think he felt he’d done the job. Matthew was a wonderful actor so I was sorry he didn’t want to be part of it. I can’t pretend that I was glad, but in this business, you must make what you’ve got work. That’s your job. So, while fans may be sad to see the end of Lady Mary’s second marriage after her first husband, Matthew Cwley, played by Dan Stevens, tragically died in a car crash in the show’s season 3 finale. Julian isn’t too worried, going on to say, “Mary will get through it. Whether she marries again or not is something else.
Downton Abbey’s Matthew Goode—who joined the show in season five—opted not to return for the latest film in the franchise. Here’s how the film dealt with his absence.

Scheduling Conflicts and their character are divorced
Relieved to see him gone – I'm a massive fan of DA, but he never 'fit' in my opinion.
An AI voice telling the story of Henry Talbot..so awfully annoying!
