‘Only Murders in the Building’ creator shares set secrets, hidden Easter eggs fans might have missed

Okay, only murders in the building. Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez. Truly the comedy trio of my dreams. You have created genius once again. John Hoffman, you really have so good. Thank you so much. Thank you. I really appreciate that. It’s it’s it’s daunting every year and then you realize, oh, you’ve got gold in the middle of it all. And so hopefully if you just shape it towards the strengths of all of that, then you’ll cross your fingers and everything should work out. Okay. Yeah, it really does. And I have to know, how quickly do you come up with who the killer is going to be each season? Oh, that’s a great question. I mean, I uh we we have to do it pretty quickly. Um and and it’s usually the first stop and sort of looking at that. Now, I say that and then it can change once we sort of like get further into the season and we sort of feel out are we aiming in the right direction? We may question it. We always poke at things, you know, as we go along and think like, is there an alternative or added thing or something like that, but ultimately we really aim to sort of like land the killer early. What exactly happened on that moment and what led up to it, the who, the how, the why, and the why now. And um all of that has to get sorted before we even go back to look at the first episode and and start. But curious to know what is one piece of trivia that even the biggest super fan would be surprised to know? Uh, that’s a great question. Trivia for like the backstage side of it or the any anything backstage, on set, the show, whatever you think would be like, whoa, I was not expecting that. Oh my god. Um, oh, I think of dumb things though. I think of things like, you know, the elevator doesn’t move. Um, okay. See, that I did not know that. So, thank you. That is cool. So, the elevator doesn’t move and that’s there’s a lot of great scenes in that elevator and a lot of tragedy that’s happening with it. So, that’s impressive thing about that elevator. Yeah. Yeah. It’s it’s it’s one of the things I love about the show is how to play with that elevator, but ultimately now it doesn’t move. We we can do stuff to it with like adjustments, but maybe that’s obvious, but um not to me clearly that and um and uh let’s see if there’s ever blood if there’s ever a pool of blood um I I try to resist using it because more often than not it’s like a gelatinous kind of thing that sits on a floor so you can pick it up and you’re not ruining people people’s costumes or getting things on people’s so it’s a thing that they can lay down and pick up. Um that’s used a lot in the business and when we first started dealing with blood I’m like that’s what shows use. I’m like, “Wait a minute. That looks like a slap happy like piece of rubber that goes down and it just can look okay.” But I end up when I see it now, I’m like, I don’t buy that. But, um, that’s the other thing. That’s so interesting. No, those are great. I love those. Has there ever been a visual clue that has just gone completely under the radar in past seasons that you’re like, I can’t believe no one picked up on that? Couple things couple things come to mind with that, which is a lot of people don’t still to this day don’t know that there’s a new clue in the opening credits for every episode. Oh my gosh. Okay. Did you know that? No, I did not. So, each each intro gives you a different a new clue. Each each opening title sequence of every episode of the 50 we’ve now done have an Easter egg in each episode that points to something in that episode. And it’s you’ll see it if you look and and there’s a whole online for like there’s 50 of them 40 of them now but there’s 10 more coming. Um but yeah that was a fun one and each year we’re like okay we work on that as well and and sort of what’s what’s the thing that we can tease? What’s the thing that’s representative of this episode? What’s a clue? What’s a little Easter eggy kind of thing we could do? And there may be various things. There may be more than one in there. So, that was one thing. Um, there is one in season five. I don’t know how how much you’ve seen or if you’ve seen any of season five yet. I haven’t seen anything yet. I’m waiting. I I wait for my mom. We watched together. So, I love that. Um, there’s a biggie in season five and and there are some uh people in the press that have seen uh the episodes and and stuff and I’ve had conversations with them and I think only one has picked up on this surprising little thing that’s going on in in season five that I hope will make people laugh and they’ll enjoy it. That’s all I’ll say about that one. Oh, that’s a good tease. I’m so excited. Now, I’m gonna keep an eye out for that and the opening credits. Yes, that’s a good one. Yeah, you’ll see. Yeah.

John Hoffman has left a paper trail.

And while “Only Murders in the Building” viewers may be experts in the comedy-drama series, the show’s creator is divulging some trivia that not every internet detective would know.

“The elevator doesn’t move,” Hoffman exclusively revealed to The Post. “And there’s a lot of great scenes in that elevator and a lot of tragedy that’s happening with that.”

Martin Short’s Oliver, Steve Martin’s Charles and Selena Gomez’s Mable often meet in the elevator when discussing their podcast, mulling over suspects or are on their way to interrogate neighbors.

In Season 3, the elevator’s malfunction foreshadowed the death of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd).
