Israeli Culture Minister Miki Zohar is threatening to pull funding from the Ophir Awards, Israel’s version of the Oscars, after a film critiquing Israel won the top prize. The Sea, helmed by Israeli director Shai Carmeli-Pollak and Palestinian producer Bahaer Agbarian, tells the story of a 12-year-old Palestinian boy living in the West Bank on his way to visit the sea for the first time. His journey is halted when Israeli authorities deny him entry at a checkpoint, per Deadline‘s description. “Determined to fulfil his dream, he sneaks into Israel and embarks on a dangerous journey to the coast, dodging checkpoint, military and police,” it continues.

#DefundMyself
Finally a cause I can get behind

Even Israel is supporting Defunding Israel.
Democrats still lack any balls.
Do you know what is well and truly fucked here?
It’s that the movie industry in fucking *Israel* has more bloody empathy and fortitude than Hollywood about Palestine.
Because it wasn’t just this film, there were multiple films about Palestine that were nominated and multiple speeches calling out the war crimes in Gaza.
Do you think the Oscars or Hollywood would let that fly? They barely let No Other Land make it to the ballot. Half the theatre sat in silence when they won.
Does anyone else see the absolute fucking insane absurdity of this situation? Israel is going to defund its own Oscars for speaking out, while their US counterparts barely acknowledges Palestine.
I thought Israel is a democracy? The only one in the Middle East btw so what’s going on?
Who needs satire when we got the news
Lol
Good idea. Don’t just stop there, keep defunding yourselves!
This is the inevitability of the Israel project. Once they get rid of the first “out” group, it will never be enough. The next will be Arabs in Israel itself, then Israelis that don’t “fit” for whatever reason. The purity pool always gets smaller.
Not Israel defunding itself before America ever does 😞
So this movie has been getting a lot of attention because of the boycotts targeting the Israeli film industry but it’s actually a perfect example of why a boycott is the correct course of action:

So some liberal zionist makes this kumbaya movie after which a literal Netanyahu mouthpiece who was on his payroll and does nothing but propagandize for the genocide of the Palestinian people uses the movie to whitewash Israel’s image and delegitimize BDS and boycotts thereby justifying the boycott in the first place. This is why anti-normalization is a very important principle to uphold, do not be confused by the content. The film is/was receiving public funding from the State of Israel, what it’s about is irrelevant.
