Jon Stewart always nails the difference between having the right to say something and being immune to consequences.

Refreshing to see someone cut through the culture war noise and just remind people what free speech actually means.

Stewart’s point that platforms are not the government is one a lot of folks seem to miss on purpose.

Jon’s right to point out the hypocrisy of the Right, but the problem is… the Right just doesn’t care about their own hypocrisy. They know they’re hypocritical. They simple say what they need to say in the moment to get what they want and will gladly change directions if doing so is in their favor. They know there is no real punishment or real consequence for hypocrisy aside from someone like Jon pointing it out on television, and that does not bother them or affect their bottom line. In fact, they probably find it funny that Jon would spend so much time and energy on pointing it out and caring rather than fighting them in some other more concrete way.
I’m not saying that what Jon is doing is pointless or that it doesn’t help some independent or Right-wing voters see the lies/games of the Right. But I do wonder if we aren’t just pointing out hypocrisy/playing a violin while the Titanic goes down. At this point, that’s just sort of what it feels like sometimes.

hits it right on the dot every damn time. Freedom of speech ain’t just sayin’ w/e you want without repercussion, it’s also holding folks accountable when they spew

This was great, but strongly strongly recommend watching the Maria Ressa interview as well. Really moving, really thoughtful.

They are like the meanest most awful kids in your middle school that bullies you every day and it’s blatantly obvious to you and all the other kids that they are cruel and liars and and should be getting in trouble but for some reason your teacher can’t see it and they keep getting away with it.
