It happened for the same reason that these sorts of things always happen, which is to say that some right-wing oligarch realized that they could make hay out of it and directed their cronies (Walsh, Shapiro, Johnson) to stir the pot. This culture-war bullshit is the most
manufactured thing on the planet, never has it ever been an authentic expression of popular outrage.
