A prominent opinion writer has spoken out against the daughter of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner for preaching about the importance of wearing masks during a speech at the United Nations this week. Author and Atlantic staff writer Caitlyn Flanigan slammed the 19-year old Violet Affleck’s call to action as condescending. The intense certainty that she’s right, the all-consuming attention to her grievance. Flanigan wrote on X above a clip of violent speaking. Ironically, the social isolation of the pandemic probably fed those traits. She became defined by it. That generation really got the worst of it. Footage of Violet’s UN appearance went viral after she claimed the world was ignoring the ongoing pandemic and that mask mandates were dropped prematurely. Pointing to generational differences, she offered an anecdote about being mystified by no smoking signs on planes as a child to say we can and must do that again with mask mandates. Her appearance was part of an event titled Healthy Indoor Air, a global call to action. Users on social media went on to debate the importance of her messaging given that masks are no longer mandated and only those at high risk of severe illness are advised to wear one based on personal preference. According to the CDC, Violet Affleck has frequently been pictured wearing a mask at events with her family. In July, she appeared before the LA County Board of Supervisors to argue that laws to suppress mandatory maskearing cause vulnerable members of our community to be less safe and make everyone less able to participate in LA. Together, I demand mask availability, air filtration, and far UVC light in government facilities, including jails and detention centers and mask mandates in county medical faculties, she told the board.
