    [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] >>
Stephen: HEY! WELCOME BACK. WELCOME BACK TO ALL THE
LITTLE MONSTERS WATCHING TONIGHT. WE NOW RETURN TO MY
INTERVIEW WITH LADY GAGA. WE ARE AT THE BETTER END IN
MANHATTAN I UNDERSTAND IT HAS A SPECIAL PLACE FOR YOU. >> Lady Gaga: VERY SPECIAL. I THINK THE FIRST TIME I
PERFORMED HERE, I WAS 14. >> Stephen: WITH A BAND, YOU
AND A PIANO? >> Lady Gaga: I WAS BY
MYSELF. I BELIEVE IT’S THAT PIANO
THAT’S RIGHT THERE. THEY TUNED IT FOR ME. I REMEMBER. I COULDN’T BELIEVE THEY DID
THAT FOR ME. >> Stephen: DO YOU REMEMBER
WHAT YOUR SET WAS? >> Lady Gaga: ALL ORIGINAL
SONGS THAT I HAD WRITTEN. I THINK I DID ABOUT MAY BE
EIGHT TO TEN SONGS. >> Stephen: WHAT NIGHT OF
THE WEEK? >> Lady Gaga: I BET IT WAS
LIKE A TUESDAY. THERE IS NO WAY THEY WERE
GOING TO GIVE ME A FRIDAY OR SATURDAY BY PERFORMED HERE
UNTIL I WAS, I DON’T KNOW, I GUESS I WAS AT LEAST 17. I WAS STILL PLAYING HERE. I HAVE — MY MOM KEPT THESE. THEY ARE FLYERS. THAT I MADE. USED TO GO TO THE COPY SHOP
AND MAKE THOSE. >> Stephen: THAT’S GREAT. >> Lady Gaga: WHEN I BECAME
LADY GAGA, PEOPLE WOULD THEN COME SEE THIS SHOW AND IF
THEY LIKD IT, THEY WOULD LEAVE THEIR NAME IN THEIR
EMAIL AND THEIR NUMBER. THAT’S ACTUALLY VERY
IMPORTANT PIECE OF PAPER THAT HAS SOME PEOPLE ON IT. >> Stephen: YOU STILL
PHYSICALLY HAVE A QUESTION MARK. >> Lady Gaga: I DO. MY MOM SAID SHE KEPT THE
PEN, THE CLIPBOARD AND THE PEN. SORRY, WE TOOK THE
CLIPBOARD. HERE’S THE SAME CLIPBOARD. I DREW LIKE A HIT LIST OF
WHO I WANTED TO TALK TO. ISLAND, DEF JAM. UNIVERSAL. THE FLOWERS AND HEARTS. >> Stephen: HOW LONG BEFORE
THIS HAPPENED? BETWEEN THIS PIECE OF PAPER
AND YOU TALKING TO THOSE PEOPLE. >> Lady Gaga: I WAS A COUPLE
YEARS. THEN THIS IS WHEN I SIGNED
MY FIRST RECORD DEAL. [APPLAUSE] >> Stephen: HOW
OLD WERE YOU? >> Lady Gaga: I WAS 19 I
BELIEVE. >> Stephen: THAT IS A VERY
CYNDI LAUPER KIND OF POSE. >> Lady Gaga: THANK YOU. THIS IS WITH ISLAND DEF JAM
AND I GOT DROPPED A FEW MONTHS LATER. >> Stephen: THAT EXCITEMENT
AND A COUPLE MONTHS LATER YOU GET DROPPED. DID THEY SAY WHY? >> Lady Gaga: I THINK AT THE
TIME THEY DIDN’T TOTALLY GET IT. >> Stephen: HOW DID YOU
    FEEL? YOU’VE GOT THIS EXCITEMENT
AND THEN YOU GET DROPPED. >> Lady Gaga: IT WAS ONE OF
THE HARDEST THINGS THAT EVER HAPPENED. I MEAN, IT WAS A VERY CRAZY
EXPERIENCE. A LOT WAS HAPPENING AT ONCE,
YEAH, IT WAS REALLY HARD. >> Stephen: HOW FAR AWAY
FROM WHERE YOU GREW UP? >> Lady Gaga: I GREW UP
UPTOWN. QUITE A WAYS AWAY FROM
THERE. UPPER WEST SIDE. BUT I MOVED WHEN I WAS 17 TO
ABOUT 20 BLOCKS FROM HERE JUST ON THE EAST SIDE. >> Stephen: FOR NONNEW
YORKERS, CAN YOU COMPARE THE VIBE OF THE LOWER EAST SIDE
AND UPPER WEST SIDE? >> Lady Gaga: VERY
DIFFERENT. VERY DIFFERENT VIBES. THE UPPER WEST SIDE WILL
ALWAYS BE A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART BECAUSE IT’S WHERE
I GREW UP BUT I DIDN’T REALLY FIT IN AT SCHOOL. WHEN I MOVED TO THE LOWER
EAST SIDE HERE, I JUST FOUND MY PEOPLE. WHEN I WOULD COME HERE TO
PLAY, THIS WAS LIKE THE MOST JOYOUS AND THE MOST WARMTH
THAT I EVER FELT. BECAUSE I WOULD WALK IN. IT WAS LIKE AN INSTANT
    FAMILY. WHEN YOU BUILD COMMUNITY
LIKE THAT WITH PEOPLE, YOU START TO BELIEVE YOU’VE GOT
SOMETHING. YOU FEEL HELD BY THEM. YOU KNOW. I THAT WAS VERY POWERFUL. I AM VERY HUMBLED SITTING
HERE WITH YOU, YOU KNOW. ‘CAUSE IT’S LIKE — THIS IS
WHERE JUST ALL STARTED. MY LOVE OF MUSIC IN MY LOVE
OF COMMUNITY AND MY LOVE OF MUSICIANS, MY LOVE OF
WRITING SONGS AND PRODUCING, IT’S AS OLD AS, IT’S AS OLD
AS THIS CARPET. >> Stephen: ALL RIGHT, METS
OR YANKEES. >> Lady Gaga: YANKEES. >> Stephen: NIX OR NETS OR
LIBERTY. >> Lady Gaga: NIX. >> Stephen: BEST CORNER OF
NEW YORK CITY? >> Lady Gaga: 72ND STREET. >> Stephen: BEST SLICE? >> Lady Gaga: RAYS. >> Stephen: WERE SUBWAY
    LINE. >> Lady Gaga: I THINK IT’S
THE L. L. IT TAKES SO LONG. THE L TAKES FOREVER. FOREVER I SPENT ON THE L. SPOON BANGLE ORDER. >> Lady Gaga: OKAY. OKAY. THERE IS TOO BAD ALL ORDERS. THERE IS THE TOASTED BUTTER
BANLE. WALK-IN. TBD. LOCKS, CREAM CHEESE, TOMATO,
SALT AND PEPPER. >> Stephen: I DARE YOU TO
RANK THE BURROS. NO ONE IS GOING TO BE UPSET. >> Lady Gaga: NOT A CHANCE. >> Stephen: START WITH
STATEN ISLAND. >> Lady Gaga: FORGET IT. >> Stephen: WHEN WE RETURN,
LADY GAGA TALKS ABOUT PERFORMING TO 2.5 MILLION
    PEOPLE IN BRAZIL. STICK AROUND.

    1. I used to go there all the time when she was 14. Lots of ambitious young artists who didn't end up with her success. UWS is boring!!! Yankees donated to Project 2025!!!

    2. I have cried to her interview. I am so proud of her, how she has been true to herself and her fans all these years despite all the pressures on her. I can listen to her speaking for hours and learn. I feel blessed and lucky to be alive at the same era as her.

    3. This is a fascinating interview with Lady Gaga. I think many singers will identify with her. Colbert makes the conversation magic.

My mother used to say, when she saw our small band in Hawaii, that I was so different on stage, like I didn’t have a care in the world. She was right. I can imagine this interview speaks to many of us – who didn’t get famous but whose daily lives were not as easy and for whom singing was freedom.

    4. Can we get interviews around her?? This is so one sided- I guess we're expected to believe her words hook line and sinker if no one else has a perspective.

    5. Wait wait wait…. First record deal, if I remember, there's another interview some time ago when she said the producer asked to take her clothes off and she said No, and get threatened to burned all her records… Is that the one ass hole company???

    6. Gosh I just love Stefani the artist and Lady Gaga her creation to the ends of the earth. She inspires me every day. Thank you, Stephen Colbert for this interview.

    7. I'm so inspired with hope that my kids generation has a positive artist like Gaga…she has literally saved lives of the ones who thought they weren't understood or seen. Much respect Lady Gaga from a gen x mom

    8. Working in Vancouver BC as a runner for her show I was back in the offices area, waiting to take them to the airport. About an hour after the show ended she just walked in with Terry Richardson taking photos and sat on an traveling case right next to me.
I sat there and smiled, her bodyguard stood right next to me. They shot photographs then we all got in vehicles and rushed off to the airport.

    9. Really enjoying this type of interview, which focuses on both the craft & the legendary performance venue alike. This style reminds me of Carson Daly’s show, ‘Last Call.’ 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    10. Thank you for asking simple questions; from her bagel orders and to the trains on the NY subway. Great segue from after she says that she feels humbled by being there. As a fan, I've never learned these things about her
