Ms Rachel calls out Obama for using “Israeli families and the people of Gaza” in a recent statement: “Palestinians have families, too. This kind of language contributes to dehumanization. Dehumanization is part of what caused so many to stay silent as 20,000 children were killed in this genocide.”

Thank you! A lot of people forget to call out Obama but he also uses language that dehumanizes Palestinians.

Palestinians have families. They deserve to live and grow and thrive in a free country.

    2. I’m glad so many people are calling this out. It’s fucking frustrating.

I don’t know if it’s true but I saw something saying over 2000 family lines had been ended during the genocide. That is devastating.

    3. I think he meant “Israeli families [of the hostages]” and “[all] the people of Gaza” but the words came out with a different connotation

    4. People talking like this is the end of the conflict, while Palestinians in the West Bank still loose their homes, while Gaz still faces a blockade, there has not been a single week go by since 1947 where there wasn’t a single Palestinian killed by Israel.

Israeli Families vs People of Gaza

Israeli hostages vs no mention of the 11,000 kidnapped Palestinians in Israeli captivity, most of them without trial

(To be included in the impending exchange is 1700 Gazans that Israel will release, specified as ” Gazans who didn’t partake in aggression” ie non combatants kidnapped from Gaza during the ground invasion)

    6. I had the same reaction to his statement, too. The most charitable interpretation I can come up with is that “Israeli families” refers primarily to families with loved ones who are hostages and/or victims of the October 7 attacks, while “people” refers to the scale of the atrocities in Gaza massively affecting an entire group of people as opposed to a subset of individuals suffering as hostages, etc. Either way, the wording is not great.

His post yesterday was incredibly disappointing and dehumanizing. What the fuck does Israel have over every current and former high ranking official?

    8. I also take issue with the fact that he places equal responsibility for reconciliation on Israelis and Palestinians. Israel destroyed the environment and razed whole cities, but Palestinians are expected to help rebuild?

    9. Never forget what Obama enabled in the Middle East… He got away with so much during his presidency.

    10. She’s correct as usual. I don’t condemn people for looking back fondly on Obama when you have someone like Trump in office, but it’s necessary to acknowledge that Dems have also played a major role in othering marginalized people. They need to be called out too.

    11. Good on her.

Obama using dehumanising language is more damaging in many circles than Trump because people who identify as liberals trust Obama.

This kind of dehumanisation, by those many look up to, is insidious and especially cruel.

    12. Obama can fuck off with his “two years of unimaginable loss and suffering.” He knows this started decades before his presidency. In 2010, Israel attacked a Gaza aid flotilla, killing 10 people, and Obama blocked the UN from investigating. It was his administration that signed a deal that would give Israel $3.8 billion in military aid annually over 10 years starting in 2019. This is the largest military aid deal ever made in US history.
