Prince William Fights Back Tears Discussing Suicide Prevention
You okay? [Music] Prince William held back tears as he talked about the devastating impact of suicide with a woman whose husband died by suicide days after the death of their one-year-old son. The royal talked with Rianne Manning about the loss of her husband in a moving 8-minute film released on World Mental Health Day on October 10th. 5 days later after we lost George, probably the unimaginable really happened. Something that we could never have ever been prepared for, totally unexpected, was Paul walked out of the house and took his own life. It’s really difficult to explain how grief feels emptiness, physical pain, your heart hurts, you know, your limbs hurt, you ache, but when you lose somebody to suicide, it leaves so many questions unanswered. Rianne and Prince William first met in 2017, and she has since started a charity named Tuish, which helps families grieving the loss of a child. Years later, they are meeting again to work together on suicide prevention. But as the two were having tea and Welsh cakes, the 43-year-old royal started getting emotional, holding back tears as Rianne revealed what she would say to Paul if he were still alive. There’s only one thing I would ever say to him if I had time with him, and that would be, “Why didn’t you speak to me?” I think I asked myself that every single day. He was absolutely devastated. He did keep blaming himself that weekend. But I would just like to sit him down like this and just say, “Why didn’t you come to me?” Because he’s missed out on just so much joy and we would have been okay. And I think that’s what the hardest thing is. We would have been okay. You okay? I’m sorry. I just It’s hard to ask you a question. Children and I know you’ve experienced loss yourself. It’s okay. Um but despite all the hardships, she explains how she copes with the loss. Life can throw you these awful curve balls, but by talking about it, by, you know, having hope, you you can continue. The best way to prevent suicide is to talk about it. Talk about it early. Talk about it with your loved ones, those you trust, your friends. So, thank you for talking about it. The Prince and Princess of Wales’s Royal Foundation has donated $1.3 million over the past 3 years to establish the National Suicide Prevention Network in the UK. According to the short film, The Network unites charities across the four home nations to understand suicide and how it can be prevented.
