Our children, Archie and Lily, are just six and four years old. Can you believe it? Megan Markle and Prince Harry are getting honest about the challenges of modern parenting. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke out in a rare joint speech at Project Healthy Minds New York City Gala on October 9th where they accepted humanitarians of the year honors for their work advocating for children’s online safety. and they shared how their own kids, Prince Archie and Princess Liizabeth, have inspired their efforts. Megan first noted just how quickly the little ones are growing up before sharing how she and Harry are already thinking about protecting them from the negative impact of social media and how that awareness fits into their larger mission. And like so many parents, we think constantly about how to embrace technologies benefits while safeguarding against its dangers. And that hopeful intention of separation is rapidly becoming impossible. Megan’s comments come one year after her and Harry’s Archwell Foundation launched an initiative called the Parents Network that offers support to those who have lost children as a result of online bullying. The organization more recently teamed up with the nonprofit Parents Together, and Harry noted why the partnership is key to helping as many families as possible. When we learned that thousands of families from every corner of society were facing the same challenges, many learning for the first time, that it was actually social media that took their child. We knew this movement needed to grow. Prior to taking the stage, Harry and Megan posed hand in hand for photos on the red carpet. The couple has long spoken out about the importance of mental health awareness, and Megan previously shared on CBS Sunday Morning in 2024 how her own past struggles, including thoughts of self harm, informed her and Harry’s continued goal to provide resources and relief for others. I believe part of our healing journey, certainly part of mine, is being able to be really open about it. And I’ve, you know, haven’t really scraped the surface on my experience, but I do think that I would never want someone else to feel that way and I would never want someone else to be making those sort of plans and I would never want someone else to not be believed. So if me voicing what I have um overcome will save someone or asks or encourage someone in their life to really genuinely check in on them and not assume that the appearance is good so everything’s okay then that’s worth it.
