I want to believe that this is some important admission but in reality Trump just says whatever’s on his mind and whatever will get him out of the conversation smoothly. I remember early in his first term so many people (regrettably myself included) really wanted to understand Trump and what he was thinking, how he operated. In reality, there’s nothing there.

Keep in mind also a month ago, when talking about his motivations to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, he said “If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think that’s pretty– I want to try to get to heaven if possible. I’m hearing that I’m not doing well. I am really at the bottom of the totem pole. But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons.” His brain is Swiss cheese at this point.

When Trump passes, look out for the barrage of revisionist history about who he was as a person and as a president. Death somehow forgives everyone of their bad behaviors. I never understood the impulse to do this. But I hope most of us will remember his true self as shown in his actions time and time again, and don’t let anyone else forget.
