Diane Keaton HONOURED: Reese Witherspoon, Amanda Seyfried & Others Mourn ‘Annie Hall’ Star

[Music] Uh, I was looking back at a lot of things last night after I heard um I I think she was just really outspoken and she was clearly very beloved as well. She’s an incredibly popular um artist that is just so so apparent and what an incredible career and an incredible person. She’s one of a kind. We can’t get another one of her. So, I think we’re all mourning that. Heard that Diane Keaton passed today. Diane was really important. She was one of my first mentors. [Applause] Boy, I know. I was thinking uh I was looking back at a lot of things last night after I heard um I I think she was just really outspoken and um I think it was kind of beautiful the way she she saw the world, the way she talked about it, and the way she um communicated through it. I don’t know. I felt like she always said what was on her mind, which is important. and impossible not to to rub off on on one who’s with her, but she was always very uh uh optimistic really. It’s really sad. She um she seemed very vital and very young. She was kind of Annie Hall and and uh in a lot of uh Woody Allen’s films, she was uh she was one of a kind really. So much the the history of an actor like Dan Keaton is so rich. She was so much more than an actress. Um obviously all of her work and collaboration with Woody Allen and then everything that came after that. She was a true original. She was singular. Um, I think the way that she took up space as a woman, she made it entirely her own. She was clearly very beloved as well. She’s an incredibly popular um, artist that is just so so apparent. And what an incredible career and an incredible person. And I think her philosophy was so so beautiful. I think my generation and I know everybody that I’ve spoken to is was incredibly just uh informed and touched and inspired by her work their whole lives. Well, I was just in the car watching old interviews of her and you forget how one of a kind she is, how relatable she feels. Um she was it was an interview with Oprah and she was saying uh because uh Annie Hall’s like my favorite movie but but when she uh would talk about like her favorite thing, she just had such simple things. They’re like, “What’s your favorite thing you like to do?” And she’s like, “Drive.” She’s like, “I love my car. I love to see the landscape.” So, anyway, I I She’s um she’s one of a kind. You can’t get another one of her. So, I think we’re all mourning that. Yeah. I think she was such a trailblazer for women. I think she was so beautifully unconventional and intelligent and talented and sort of she seemed so confident in her acting and I just I think I she’s just a huge inspiration. Diana was really important. She was one of my first mentors in this business. I was 15 years old and I was from Nashville, Tennessee and I didn’t know anybody and I came in, it was my second, maybe my third movie audition ever and I came in with this big country accent and I was playing this little southern girl and she goes, “Who are you?” I said, “I’m Reese Witherspoon. I’m from Nashville, Tennessee.” And she said, “Are you making that up? That that accent you’re doing?” And I said, “No, ma’am. I’m from Nashville, Tennessee, and I’m here and I’d love to be in your movie.” And she was like, “Well, you’re hired. You’re hired today, tomorrow, and the next day. I don’t know who you are, but I am so excited to have you.” She is just incredible and indelible and just a truly original person. So, for Diane, watch one of her movies. Um, and and wear like a really cool interesting outfit, black and white, take a cool picture, and just live your dream. Just be your unique, interesting self. I think Diana would be really happy.
