Louvre Heist: How Thieves Stole “Priceless” Jewelry in 7 Minutes | E! News
The Louvre was the target of a real life heist. Minutes after opening October 19th, the famed Parisian museum was broken into with a group of four thieves walking away with nine pieces of France’s crown jewels. According to NBC News citing officials, the heist was executed with a Monty Melbour, a truck with an aerial lift often used to move furniture to the upper levels of a building. The thieves navigated to the balcony outside the Apollo Gallery and slice the window to gain entry. The outlet also states the thieves threatened the museum staff with ankle grinders, then smashed the jewels display cases, taking necklaces, tiaras, and brooches, all within 7 minutes. Authorities confirmed there were no injuries among the museum staff. One of the objects taken was an emerald and diamond necklace and matching earrings Napoleon Bonapart gave his wife Marie Louise, as well as a sapphire necklace by Napoleon’s stepdaughter, Hornense. The crown of Empress Eugenie, Empress to Napoleon III in the 19th century, was also taken. Officials said the crown was found damaged near the scene after the thieves dropped it as they escaped on scooters. And while authorities were on the hunt to find the missing items, Chris Marinelo, the chief executive of Art Recovery International, which specializes in locating stolen jewelry, noted if the pieces are not found within 24 to 48 hours, they are quote long gone. telling the BBC, “There is a race going on right now. They are going to break up the pieces, melt down the valuable metal, recut the valuable stones, and hide evidence of their crime.” Adding police quote may catch the criminals, but they won’t recover the jewels. The museum has remained closed since the heist.

I can't believe they show off the actual items and not replicas. When you go to the natural History museum in DC, you aren't looking at real bones, they are replicas.
