    1. My faith in humanity is slowly but surely coming back. Hope is not lost. πŸ’™πŸ’™

    2. As a New Jerseyan who has been involved in local politics, this is big news for a number of reasons:

      * The New Jersey governorship is possibly the most powerful one of its kind in the US. That’s because the NJ gov is armed with the power of line item veto. This gives them great latitude in changing bills and reshaping the budget as they like. For instance, Governor Chris “Bridgegate” Christie managed to shutter multiple family planning clinics in the state despite the Dem-run legislature repeatedly voting to fund them.
      * Sherrill was running against a bit of a headwind: our incumbent governor, Phil Murphy, is a Democrat, and deeply unpopular because people blame him for a lot of the problems going around. Murphy is actually a decent governor who is to the left of what we usually get in NJ, but voters love to blame the wrong people.
      * I don’t think I need to explain in detail just how detrimental it’d be to have a Republican with the immense power of the NJ governorship going along with everything Trump wants.
      * Bonus: It seems there’s a blue wave down ballot as well, with some Republican incumbents getting flipped on the town level, and possibly some bigger upsets in the state legislature as well!

Does she have to wait for some corrupt piece of shit to actually let her assume the role?

    5. The state I grew up in is still making me proud. I’d actually been following this race (and New Jersey politics in general) for a while for that reason even though I haven’t lived there in over a decade. This race wasn’t necessarily in the bag for the Democrats despite its reputation as a blue state; the Republicans are competitive at the state and local levels, it elected the Republican Chris Christie to two terms as governor in 2009 and 2013, their current Democratic governor Phil Murphy is unpopular, and Mikie Sherrill was until recently acting like her victory was a foregone conclusion and barely even campaigning. The fact that this race has already been called for Sherrill and, by all appearances, wasn’t even close illustrates just how toxic the GOP brand is right now, especially in places like New Jersey.
