Dominic Monaghan reveals big plans for next ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie

I’ve seen Rings of Power. Obviously, it’s not it’s not necessarily something that I watch generally. We did lend our support. Myself, Elijah, Sean, and Billy lent our support to kind of say to people, listen, if it’s if it’s not your type of show and you want to protect the the, you know, Peter Jackson uh Lord of the Rings franchise, that’s that’s fine. You can do that. You don’t have to watch it and and you can support the Peter Jackson trilogy as much as you want. What we were trying to get behind was that that is not a permission for you to now spew hate towards these new actors or these new filmmakers. There is room in Middle Earth for everyone. And if someone wants to come at it from a different angle and they want to do an animated version or they want to do a German version or they want to do Lord of the Rings in space or any of these things, we just let people do it. And if you don’t like it, that’s fine. You don’t like it. That is that is not permission for you to shout and scream and rant and rave and all that kind of stuff. What what I will say about the Peter Jackson trilogy um which I which I say very often to people is it’s the only project that I’ve done in my entire career which I’ve been lucky enough to to do some other relatively well-known pieces of work where it gets stronger and stronger the further that I get away from it. Everything else fades, which is really interesting. And and big projects have faded over the years. You know, Star Wars fades, X-Men fades, uh Lost fades. You can you can feel it fading. And maybe they bring it back in some other way and it has a little bit of a moment, but it’s gradually fade uh fading over time. P. The Jackson Lord of the Ring trilogy went from being when it came out in the cinema went from being a a great film that people seem to like to a relatively quick kind of modern classic to a classic to an out andout Stonewall classic piece of benchmark cinema. And being involved in something like that kind of keeps you in this very exalted, very fortunate position of knowing that you’re lucky enough to be part of the history of of that medium. At some point when you’re telling the story of cinema, at some point you have to put a pin in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and say, “And then this happened,” you know, and to be involved in something like that is just an actor’s dream come true. I mean, would you ever return as Mary in some kind of capacity? Has there ever been any talks at all? There’s always been talks because obviously, you know, I’m I’m still super tight with with Pete Jackson and his team. And I think I will probably go to New Zealand next year when they are filming The Hunt for Gollum, which obviously my great friend Andy Circus is going to star in and direct him. There’s going to be, I think, some other people from Lord of the Rings going down there, too. I would like to just be on set just to lend support to Andy and say hello to people. I I think that that particular story takes place at a time where if if we’re just talking about my character, Mary Mary isn’t necessarily involved in anything super important. I think he’s probably still uh enjoying pints of beer in the local pub and and being being a young man growing up in the Shire, you know. So, um, we have talked about stuff and I think, you know, who knows? I think to to be honest, I think everyone’s everyone in the Lord of the Rings gang, the the Pete Jackson Lord of the Rings gang is is putting a lot of faith behind this Gollum film in the hopes that it shows that there’s an appetite for people to want more Lord of the Rings stuff. And if that happens and the film is successful and people seem to have voted with their feet to say we would we would like to consistently go back to Middle Earth, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some some Hobbit stories to tell. It’s cozy, right? Why would you want some cozy stories? And I know you can’t say much, but of course being on set that could be kind of in, you know, maybe you could be on screen for it. I honestly at this point that set visit a hand on my heart would be would be an opportunity to go and see some crew members that are obviously they’re obviously working on the the rings trilogy see Andy be around maybe be there over a couple of weekends where we have some dinners and you know because you’re going to have cast members and and and crew members that are going to start to get exhausted from the schedule and and maybe might benefit from a little bit of moral support and and people being there. So, it’s it’s honestly for me an opportunity to go down to New Zealand hopefully when the weather’s still good, see some friends, have some fun. And listen, it, you know, if if Andy says to me, you know, put on a floppy hat and and a cape and go stand 300 feet over there and we’ll just see a blurry figure in the distance, you know, like I think famously Prince played the body in Fargo. Did you know that piece of movie history? So, you know, if Andy’s like, “Look, you can go do something in the background,” then of course maybe. But at this point, it’s just an opportunity to go see friends.

Dominic Monaghan isn’t done with Middle-earth just yet.

The “Lord of the Rings” alum, 48, wants to be on the set of “The Hunt for Gollum,” the next film in the fantasy franchise slated for release in Dec. 2027.

“I’m still super tight with Pete Jackson and his team, and I think I will probably go to New Zealand next year when they are filming ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ which obviously my great friend Andy Serkis is going to star in and direct,” Monaghan exclusively told The Post while promoting his new movie, “Long Shadows.”
