This call is part of a running series where she calls churches to see if they would help, so far she's gotten more nos than yes. The user is nikalie.monroe on tiktok.

Also, a lot of people in her videos have been defending the churches, saying that its not their job to help people who aren't part of the church and giving money to, tho, they also seem unable to explain why the churches get to be exempt from taxes if they can't help.

    1. It’s not the church’s job to help people who don’t donate, just like it’s not the government’s job to help tax payers apparently. And to be clear, when I say tax payers I mean every single person. Immigrants, documented or not, unhoused, unemployed, whatever.

I called my own church from a partial hospitalization program because I wanted to end my life. I called in an emotional state and spoke at length with the receptionist. I wasn’t even asking for money or resource support, I asked to talk to someone who could help me sort out the faith-based challenges that were contributing to my depression. I never received a call back. Weeks later, after unloading my frustration onto a close friend who also attended the same church, she intervened, and I got a call from the pastor a few days later. He spent ten minutes of our 12 minute call telling me all of the problems in his personal life that prevented him from reaching out (kids were sick, dog died, sad wife who was spending a month away from him???). He never asked how I was doing. I now view churches* as nothing more than tax-free social clubs for white people with means.

*not all churches are like this, but I live in a particular geographic area with insane cultural norms and there are no ethical churches here, in my view.

This woman is single-handedly doing the work our media should have been doing for decades now. If churches don’t pay taxes *this* is how you audit them

I asked my parents in the fam group chat if their church was putting together a donation for the food bank (I was quite certain they wouldn’t be) and their answer (the ‘hell no’ I anticipated) kicked off 3 days of rage texting and scripture flinging that roped in censure from multiple other family members and led to $1400 being shame-donated to the food bank (but none of it from their church or any Christians in the chat)

I remember when I was needing support with rent/housing in Seattle and the city was recommending I reach out to churches. I’m a queer atheist and hated it but did it because it was necessary.

The churches refused but they certainly sent me mail once a week asking me to come to church for worship
