Captain Sandy dishes on ‘Below Deck Med’ and her excitement for BravoCon 2025 | Virtual Reali-Tea
They party hard, but they play hard, they work hard, and they get rewarded. Virtual reality dating. All right, Captain Sandy from Below Deck Med. Danny and I are so excited to have you in studio. It’s been such a good season so far. How are you feeling about it? I feel great. I’m in Barcelona where I used to live. The America’s Cup is happening and I’m on a really cool boat called Bravado. That’s like a lot of wins. What a dream. Wait, and also I do love that you’re a shopper. Yes, I am. Did you rock them? You mean they’re a little bit like things on my feet? No, I know. But you They are great, aren’t they? I love Chanel loafers for yesterday and went yesterday. How is the feeling of shopping in person? And also, are you a big shopper usually or is like a splurge? Well, we shop. Yes. But it’s in little splurges, right? Cuz when you shop, you spend a lot. I love this. So then you need the time to recover and then you go and spend a lot because there’s nothing where like especially when it comes to Chanel shoes, they are not, you know, Yes. It’s a pretty penny. Are you And they last a long time. So Okay. All right. So it’s an investment. Are you an efficient shopper or do you like to spend your whole day kind of like perusing or are you like in and out? Do you know what you want? No. I walk through if I see something catches my eye. Oh. Oh my god. And then I look at the price and I go. But you’re like, but I already I got I go I need another speaking deal. Yeah, exactly. We got to go to work now and we went top shopping and we came out with I don’t know, eight pairs of shoes. Oh my god, I’m obsessed. Okay, what a beautiful Bravo Con. I needed shoes for Bravo. Are you so excited for Bravo Con? Yes, me too. Oh my god, we cannot wait. No, that’s the thing cuz like cuz a all the glamorous one Bravo less, but also B Vegas, you just have to kind of like I feel you have to dress like not yourself. You know what I mean? To be properly in Vegas. Like you just I’m like should I wear sequins, you know? Yeah. How are you amping it up for Vegas? You’re kind of amping it up today. Italy. I bought my outfits in Italy. Wow. And then we came here to buy the shoes because I didn’t have time in Italy. That’s very chic. Okay. What can we tease about the style that we’ll be showcasing in Vegas? You know, I’m a suit girl. I don’t wear dresses. So, I like Armani. There’s a couple, you know, and I like different like Leah goes, “Yeah, that’s the crazy look. You like that?” So, yeah. I like bling. I like, you know, I like statement pieces. I like that. Yeah. For a little sparkle and everything like that. And also because it makes sense that you like statement pieces because you are such a statement to Bravo. I mean I can’t imagine the the network without you. And how does it feel because you have been doing Below Deck for so long. How do you stay like excited for new seasons? You know what I mean? Cuz even when you love what you do for work, there are days you’re like, “Oh my god, I’m so tired.” But how what keeps you motivated? I get to drive the boat. I mean, that’s the best part. Like what I love about doing this show, I get a new boat every season. M if I work on a boat as a captain, we have the same boat for years. We never get to drive different boats. I get to drive different yachts. That does sound very flattering. So, I yacht hop. It’s really cool. And how do you think the show has evolved over the course of a decade? I mean, and do you like like how it has evolved or is there anything you miss about the old days of filming? Definitely not. Okay. Uh I like how it’s evolved. We’ve evolved together. I had to learn that we’re filming a TV show. They had to learn that we actually go to sea with a lot of people. So we learned that together. There’s the mutual respect with production. Um Bravo did a amazing thing by actually putting it on air. It reaches millions of people all over the globe and says, “Hey, look at this industry where we count our cash.” Like we’re like this with our cash, right? But we work hard. If you watch those that crew work hard, they party hard, but they play hard. They work hard and they get rewarded. And that’s these jobs are out there for kids. Um, parents call me, “How do I get my kids in this industry or write me?” And what do you tell them? I mean, what’s like the first step? The first step is go get your STCW95. Okay. What does that mean? It’s a weekl long class. Okay. We do firefighting, uh, manboard drills, safety drills. You learn about social living together. Okay, that’s fun. So, there’s a whole day about taking a shower, using deodorant. I feel like more people just need that those lessons a day. That’s actually a day in class, believe it or not. Wait, that is so funny. Oh my god. You know, you live in a community teaching them how to do that. And also all the rules that are associated with it. Have a huh clean drug test, of course. Okay, that’s good. And a physical. Okay, definitely pass the physical. And I do feel like because it is so much fun from Below Deck is watching the crew interact, but also the charters, the people, the people that are going on it. And some of them are so in a loving way, some of them are so crazy. Yeah. Do you still get surprised by some of the things that the people are doing? You know what I mean? Are you just like oh my like not like you know what I mean? So I will tell you this in the world of yaching clients could do what they want like it is their boat. It’s like renting a house that floats. They can do whatever they want as long as they’re not hurting anyone or doing something illegal. Okay. That we see. Right. Right. Right. So it’s usually behind the like that’s before below deck. And then below deck is of course we want people to behave. But it’s their charter. Let them have fun. If they, you know, whatever they want to do, it’s fine. Just don’t harass the crew. When we were chatting with Asia, she told us that one of the guests this season kind of turned the boat into his own dating show, which I’m kind of like obsessed with. What do you remember from his time on the boat? So, yes, exactly. Like, yeah, you saw that on the trailer. Yeah. So basically it was uh a matchmaker from Miami, Amy brought on women and her client uh which was from the Carolinas and they did a matchmaking and so I don’t know. Let’s see what the viewers think. It’s the first time we’ve ever done anything like that. Amazing. Would you do you um recommend people finding love like that? You’re on a super yacht. It’s romantic. Why not? I mean, you’re on the we’re, you know, we’re floating around the Mediterranean. It’s so romantic. I know. Well, that’d be the That’s such an easy I feel like everyone will just instantly fall in love. Yeah, I think so. You know what I mean? It’s a pretty good It’s almost like you have like beer on but it’s the middle of Yeah. You know, it’s Mediterranean goggles. Yeah, absolutely. Then they go home and like where’s my yacht? Yeah. You’re like, “Where’s Carol?” So, the girls the girls who didn’t make the cut, did they have to like walk the plank? Like, were they kicked off the yacht? What happened to them? Or did they get to stay on the whole charter? Well, you got to watch the show to find out. I’m so intrigued. I can’t wait. I think also competition like that is something that also could thrive at Bravo. Why do I feel because there’s a lot of beefs going on, you know, in the Bravo verse where I feel like you could make them kind of settle or walk the plank. You know what? I always wanted to be the housewife’s therapist and take them to sea and if they don’t make up, they walk they got to swim back. Now, you might we might be meeting your services in the Jersey Shore. Yeah, cuz Teresa and Melissa, you of course you know them from Jersey Housewives. Yes. They are on route to potentially make amends after a really long nasty feud. But they could I would be more hopeful for the outcome if you were there with them. Yeah. And I don’t know. I don’t want mediator. Yeah. I was going to say I think you could really help them get to like the meat and potatoes of it. You know what? I just don’t sugarcoat anything and just tell the truth. And just like listen to learn to listen, right? And I’m sure take it on like, okay, I did that so I’m sorry. Right. And say that. I do it all the time with Leah. Yeah. And you guys are you’re good friends with Julia and Martina from Miami Housewives. Have you been keeping up with her drama with Adriana? Mostly because you were in the mix. Oh, you were in the mix with the Gertie drama. Yeah. Well, yeah. You know, it’s so interesting. I I watch and go, “Wow, I had no idea that was happening.” Um, yeah, a little bit. You know, I am busy, so I do I do my best to keep up. But we know Leah’s Leah’s a big Bravo fan. So, yeah, Leah fills me in, which is great. Has Leah found out who the Haitian mortician is? Has she? Have you? Do we know? No comment. Okay. No, we’re getting a no comment. Okay. So, okay. Someone has a coffee mate over there. No something. Okay. But you’re I feel like you’d be a great mediator to help them get back on. Are you close with Adriana? Have you mingled with Adriana before? No. No, I’m not. Well, speaking of Housewives, the Housewives are going to have a crossover on Down Under, I heard you were a little bit jealous of that. Totally. Now, if you could cross over with any Housewives franchise, who which group of ladies would you pick? Would it be Miami? It would be New York because in the beginning I was really, you know, close with Dinda and, you know, the New York housewives. It was it was more about New York, right? Miami wasn’t filming then. So I think you’re in your early years, that’s where you’re you’re most connected, right? So even my first charter crew. Yeah. Like I’m still very very close to them. Wait, really? Oh my god. My first charter. Yeah. Now also it is while I love the OG Rooney ladies, you are up. You are challenging yourself if you want to keep them happy on a Friday. That’s what I want because I want even Lisa Vanderpot would be great because I want to be critiqued because I want the crew to see what it’s really like when you’re really under pressure, you know, with, you know, well, never mind. I’m not going there anyway. It should be fun. How does the pressure help? Do you work? Pressure makes us better. Like if you’re playing pool, I always say this, and you have someone who’s your equal, are you going to get better at playing pool? Yeah, that’s a good point. Yeah. Someone’s better than you, your game. You’re going to kick up your game. Yeah, I like that. Is there anyone from the yaching industry who you worked with before you became a reality TV star who like reaches out now and is like, “Wow, I’m so proud of you. I can’t believe that.” Or, “I can believe.” Oh, yeah. I know a lot of people in yaching. I’m still very much part of my yaching life, right? Leah, we were just at the Monaco Boat Show. Do you compartmentalize? They’re proud. They’re happy. In the beginning, they didn’t like the show. I’m like, “Wait a minute, it actually does.” I liked it because it highlights what the captains go through. Um, but yeah, a lot of owners of yachts watch the show. They love it. They’re like, “Oh my god, that’s what my crew do.” Um, some don’t like it. Uh, remember when I got the wine from the yacht in the Greece? Oh. Mhm. He didn’t like us. But they did sell us the wine at a very expensive price. Okay. And how I feel like cuz like you were saying you’re going to boat shows and you’re going to a ton of yaching events and everything. Have you felt Did you feel like the first maybe two or three seasons people are like what’s happening? I’m like hi you. Yeah. For me. Yes. For you it was cool. But as a captain in a boat show that is on yachts. Norma Theres I talk about her a lot. She would always have me speak on boat show panels so people knew who I was. TV. It was next level. It’s like it’s crazy. Like it’s wild. In the beginning it was fun and now it’s like wow. You just don’t want to let people down. They’re excited to see you and Yeah. And I know you said that pressure helps you, you know, like reach new heights and everything, but how do you unwind? You know what I mean? Cuz I feel like you’re always working kind of. How do I unwind? Like we have fun. We play in the pool. We play games. Like my sister came over the other night. We all played a card game on the table. Like I’m like this is a great We should play for money. Okay. Well, you’re going to Vegas. What are sports? It’s like we were in the Bahamas, my old boss’s boat. Like that was great. Harbor Island. That’s a fun and we get to go in other people’s boats. Okay. So, can you unwind on another person’s boat or you like you’re doing what with what? I can unwind. Okay. For sure. I was on that hydro e foil the whole time. Okay. Leah was like riding the waveunner making sure I didn’t get a shark bite. Oh my. Wait, have you actually like throughout all of your yaching experience? I’m so like obsessed with the idea of shark sightings. Do you see them? Are you scared? Do you care? Like how does that like affect you? Okay. I respect sharks. Okay. Of course. I look, you know, we have uh fish finders on board so you can actually see where the fish are. So I look at that and I’m like, “Oh, this is good.” Yeah. So when we drop anchor, I always look. So there is a shark radar that you have. Maybe we should move somewhere else. That’s so interesting. Have you ever had a close encounter with a shark? Well, I was in Oman. Okay. You know where some people summer. Yeah, I work for a billionaire Arab and um we were anchored there and there were sharks everywhere and he’s like go swim captain and I’m like yeah no I’m good. Oh my god. I’m like you come with me. He’s like no sharks. And I’m like yeah of course Florida I grew up in Florida. There are a lot of sharks. So we used to see the hammerheads swim by. But now sharks are hungry. They’re more hungry. So I respect the sharks. Sharks don’t have we go. But you can get the shark bands. What does that do? It sends out a frequency that propels like Wait, really? Yeah. Oh my god. Okay. I I trust you, but I also don’t want to try it. You know what I mean? Like I’m like I don’t like supposedly they work. A lot of surfers wear them. I’ll I’ll leave them to experiment. One time we went to Grand Cayman together on a press trip and there was an excursion to go swimming with stingrays. And I’ve like I’ve never seen you quite so No, I just didn’t want to cuz they wanted to do like kiss the stingray for luck. Well, you were going to get good luck for some and I said the best luck is knowing my worth and I know I’m not going to kiss a stingray. It’s kind of like Max petting the jellyfish and then rubbing his Yeah. Yeah. And also I’m like, why am I trusting a stingray with my luck? You know what I mean? I agree. I Well, thank you. I was trusting. I trusted this. I I guess I You’re going to go in that state building next every tourism event. Sting. That’s the first word. Yeah. No. A bunch of them at one place. Like what if they get upset? Exactly. Exactly. And also everyone just flopping them around. And what I don’t like too Oh, no. I’m on the top. They’ll just like be like take a photo of them, kiss them, and then everyone’s like, “Dun.” I’m like, “Oh.” I don’t like people just living for Instagram, Sandy. Yeah. You know what I mean? I mean, I know. You got to go. How’s your luck? Do you know what? I’ll show you the photo. It was really cute. Yeah. But then immediately after he was like getting out of water. I was like, “Get me back on the boat.” Wait. Are there any places that you want to like bucket list to travel? I feel cuz like when you’re dropping You’ve been everywhere. Well, not really. I haven’t been everywhere. Uh, you know, honestly, I Well, we’re going we’re going to Budapest to um Vienna. We’re going on a little cruise cruise. Speaking on the boat. Nice. Okay. So, so that’s a bucket list. Yeah. Alaska. I’ve never been. Oh, my in-laws did an Alaskan cruise and said it was the best vacation of their entire lives, which is crazy to me. But they said climbing on a glacier is really something else. Yeah, I would like to. I don’t know about climate. Well, yeah. Yeah, those are not glaci like animals. Like I’ve been on three safaris. Oh, wow. So, I like seeing the animals. You want to pet them, but they’re wild. They look so tame. You’re like, “Yeah, I can’t.” really. Oh, that little lion is so cute. And I mean, I feel you do have a lot of exciting things, but if you could have something that’s like for 2026, what are you most looking forward to? Whether it be my honestly um my life with Leah because you know, we’re recently married. Yes. Moved into our house and 2026 I, you know, I told her I go, “These are all these cool places I want to take you that she hasn’t been.” And I that’s what I’m looking forward to. And for someone for anybody who is doing like you know the moving in what have you had to have you learned anything about yourself in the moving in process or have you had to compromise on anything? We lived together for for three years. I was in Denver for five. We lived together for three before we built our house. How we’re great together. Okay. What’s great? I tell you like if we have a disagreement I do it. I taught Leah the word doover and she taught me the word grace. Okay. So yeah. I get a lot of divisions. Okay, that’s good. That is good. I come as a captain, so I have to learn not to be captain-like. Oh, but I am very playful. I have a big child and we have a lot of fun. Yeah. And I think I taught Leah how to play more. Any marriage advice for Asia as she gets ready to tie the knot? Pay attention to your person. Yeah. Okay. It isn’t always about what you’re doing out here. That’s why 2026 for me is all about Leah. Yeah. Oh, I love that. And well, speaking of We have to work. We have to show like we have to go to work. What’s important? Exactly. And speaking of building a life together, Nathan and Gail are now they now have a little baby. It was such a surprise. I mean, yeah. What are what’s your thoughts on that? And was it were you did you expect this like what I mean? I did not. However, I was kind of blown away. Yes. And things happened for a reason. That baby changed both their lives. And I know that Nathan is very much in love with Gail. Oh, I know that cuz I got to witness that. Yeah. And Gail loves Nathan and they are they are a family unit. I just wish them all the best and call if you need relationship advice. Like but I’m not a parent, right? Leah’s great. Leah was a parent. So yeah. And isn’t that it’s just so cute that you get to watch them kind of like get go like through all these like beautiful stages together and it’s not always easy, right? There’s rough patches of course, lack of sleep. But even when I film, if I don’t get enough sleep, I become grumpy. Oh, girl, I got that. I feel you. Yeah. I mean, me too. A lot more shortfused. And yeah, the crew start to annoy me more. That’s when I just say, “Stop talking.” I can’t hear your voice anymore. Uhhuh. I feel that. And we don’t have that much time left, but I am wondering because we are going to be seeing you in a month in Vegas and we are so excited for Broadway. Is there someone you’re most excited to see in everybody? Like honestly, I love my obviously the fans. They’re we’re there because of them, but we all get to sit in the room together. So, I get to see all the other people on all the other shows and I like sitting at tables where people I don’t know or haven’t met yet and just meet them. I love that part. And you got everyone from NBC, Bravo in the room, which is really great. Everyone’s participating and that’s the best part. It’s such a fun mix. It is so fun and it’s chaotic and fun. It is cool. It’s It’s cool. Well, you’re the coolest and we appreciate you for taking the time today. S I’m excited to see what fits we got in Italy. I know. I know. Thank you so much for stopping by. That’s all I got.
