Kristen Stewart on Men and Method Acting
I’ve always been uh fixated on uh Marlon Brando’s performance as uh himself, but it’s particularly his performance as as Superman’s dad in the first Superman film where like he has to say the word Krypton in that movie, the the planet where Superman is from. And I’ve never seen this. Does he like not say it? Is he like krypton? You are the only survivor of the planet Krypton. That’s exactly how he says it. He says krypton. Krypton He can’t commit to Krypton. I’ve literally I can picture this and I’ve never seen the movie krypton and everyone else in the movie says krypton and I’m sure at some point somebody’s like you know Marlin it’s actually pronounced krypton and then I brought this up this poor poor male actors god it must it must just be so painful it must have been hard to be Marla Brado so performance is inherently vulnerable and therefore quite embarrassing and unmasculine you know what I mean like there’s no bravado in in suggesting that you’re a mouthpiece now for someone else’s ideas and that to sort of lend yourself, you know, it’s just inherently submissive. Yeah. Have you ever heard of a female actor that was method? And I mean like really like you know, and I’m not coming for like the method. I I don’t even know enough about the method. I mean, the only name that comes to mind is a teacher, you know, Stella Adler, but I can’t I can’t think of a a performer who’s associated with it, right? um in the way that some men are associated with it, right? Men are a grandized for retaining self, you know, that was like he’s been really like he sounds like a hero, doesn’t he? Yeah. Um, if a woman did that, it would be uh really I I I tr and and I don’t want to say this like black and white, like for sure I know that there would be this difference, but I I truly believe from a very insidider perspective that if you have to do 50 push-ups before your closeup or if you refuse to sort of say a word a certain way or if you can’t sit down in an interview and not kind of like repossess and belittle every question, especially if asked by a woman to you, the movie star. I mean like Brando, he’s an I mean like I’m not coming for him. Incredible performer. There’s a kind of like um really common act that happens before the acting happens sometimes on set. Not only does it waste time, it draws attention. And it siphons. And look, I get it sort of makes if it makes everyone stand at attention and sort of if it if it if you can protrude out of the vulnerability a little bit and you can sort of feel like, you know, a gorilla pounding their chest before they cry on camera, it’s a little less embarrassing to see. And also, it makes it seem like it’s a magic trick. It makes it seem like it’s so impossible to do what you’re doing that nobody else could do it.

Preach
She doesn’t finish her sentences so the ideas are unfinished and confusing
I think this sudden attack on method acting, is total bullshit. The much harped on commentary about the lack of notable female actors using the method in film, is arbitrary and asinine. That could have more to do with the lack of interesting and demanding lead roles being given to women in Hollywood, than anything else.
I'm a "whatever works" proponent. Obviously, method actingnworks for some actors, to some degree, or they wouldn't be doing it. If DDL could give the same performance without going to such extremes, per his own words, he would. He feels like he needs to. And hwos to tell the only actor to win 3 Oscar's, who is widely considered the greatest film actor of all time, that they are wrong? If you can get there without it, good for you.
Obviously, there are people who do these things for attention, or people who are rude on set as a result, but that doesn't mean that it's useless for everyone. In film, it really makes a lot of sense. They often shoot out of sequence. In a play, you're virtually in character for the entire production. I can see how it could be useful for some, if they maintain their character between shots in a film. I can also see how it could be useful to put yourself through things that might enrich your understanding of what the character is going through. This isn't rocket science. I don't see why so many are confused by such approaches.
she is the worst.
She's not wrong.
Kirsten Stewart on Marlon Brando… interesting
….she is LITERALLY one of the worst actresses of all time.
Plenty of women have been described as using Method techniques, including Lady Gaga, Hilary Swank, Meryl Streep (earlier in her career), Angelina Jolie, and others who’ve done intense, stay‑in‑character preparation for specific roles.
And don't be an asshat. You know you saw Superman The Movie, Kristen.
This is a great ad for watching (or listening to) the whole thing.
Why is the pronunciation of a word or place a gender thing?
Vulnerability is unmasculine? That ain’t a word 😂
So good
Meryl Streep. Hillary Swank. Lady Gaga. I believe they are Oscar winners 🐝otch, bye.
Who is the long haired skinny dude on the right? Heroin addict?
she aint wrong, i wasnt expecting to like her response
She's smart…!👌
So fucking smart.
Lol, Kristen Stewart critiquing Marlon Brando might be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. 😀
Weird take. Then again, she’s got about 3% the acting ability of Brando.
Everybody seems to be incredibly impressed by this analysis .. but why?!
Didn’t she just generalize over male actors by basically simplifying the way male actors “function” compared to female ones ..? Could there possibly be other interpretations to make – maybe even ones with more depth and nuance?
