Sydney Sweeney Explains Her “Silence” During American Eagle Ad Controversy | E! News

Sydney Sweeney is addressing the controversial American Eagles ad. Months after the denim campaign sparks debate over the use of the word jeans as a play on genetic jeans, the actress addresses why she chose to stay silent, admitting she regrets not speaking out sooner, telling People magazine in an interview published December 5th, “Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always trying to bring people together. I’m against hate and divisiveness. In the past, my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press. But recently, I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide and not closed it. So, I hope this new year brings more focus on what connects us instead of what divides us. City first responded to the backlash during an interview with GQ in November where she shared a surprise by the reaction to the advertisement, telling the outlet, “I did a Gene ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. And although the conversation surrounding the July ad became so wide that even President Donald Trump shared his thoughts, Sydney maintained that it quote didn’t affect her. As she put it, I knew at the end of the day what the ad was for, and it was great jeans. [Music]

    1. Not buying it the other interview sed it all Plus shes only speaking out now that her movie was another flop she wanted that hate money now shes got just hate and deserves every minute of it ✌️

    2. Such ridiculousBS-Sidney didn't give an opology with this last statement-AND SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE"The left wing lunatics have gotten ridiculous.Woke fatigue is real.😊

    3. Seriously how can anybody nowadays defend their position ? Is there any reason with this witch hunting times we live in. No need to say anything girl, everybody will eventually be offended or unsatisfied, dont bother

    4. My gosh, it wasn't a racist ad. We have to get over that people are racist, etc. It's 2025 and the American people have shown there not racist. Obama was voted in twice. Jean commercials with cute women go back into the 70's with Brooke Shield.

    5. Sydney Sweeney should not apologize for anything only the liberals because they choose to ignore that Black People are the most racist people out there.

    6. lets see how many conservatives go see her film now since she double backed not that its gonna make a difference since majority of them are misogynistic and didnt see her other two films prior to this one anyway i love seeing racist grifters flop

    7. 😂😂😂😂 she thinks we’re as dumb as she looks. Is your bank account crying to be fed girl?! 😂😂😂 The SS and incels didn’t pay like you thought they would ay

    8. She knew what she was saying. She knew how people would take it. That's why she said it. She knew she could get attention. She wanted to speak her mind. She doesn't regret it at all.

    9. Sydney apologized because she NEEDS to. The right has not been supporting her movies. Her movies have been flopping extremely hard. Gooning to her is not the same as contributing to the box office. She's backtracking to save her career from further flops and lost opportunities.

    10. You can say whatever words your publicist and the jews in the movie studios want, but you cannot take back the contempt in your eyes when you looked at that interviewer.
