Rob Reiner’s son Nick wore ‘anti-suicide smock,’ cuffs on hands and feet at court hearing

Nick Reiner appeared in court Wednesday for the first time since his parents, Rob and Michelle Reiner, were brutally stabbed to death. The 32-year-old was escorted into Los Angeles Municipal Court one day after he was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder following his arrest over the weekend. With disheveled hair, Nick remained stoic and somber throughout the hearing. Looking straight ahead, he was shackled at both hands and feet and wore an anti-suicide smok. Nick spoke only three words during the appearance to tell the judge, “Yes, your honor.” Confirming that he was sure he wanted to wave his right to a fast arraignment. Following the short hearing, Nick’s lawyer, famed criminal defense attorney Alan Jackson, announced to reporters outside the courthouse that his client would be arraigned on January 7th. He also asked the public to not rush to judgment or jump to conclusions, as he described the case as quote, “very, very complex and serious.” Nick’s siblings, older brother Jake Reiner and younger sister Romy Reiner, released a statement following the hearing. They spoke about the unimaginable pain of the horrific and devastating loss of their parents, notably not mentioning their brother. On Sunday afternoon, Rob, who was 78, and Michelle, who was 70, were found by their daughter stabbed to death in their Brentwood home, with sources claiming their throats had been slit. The LA County Medical Examiner has confirmed that the couple died from multiple sharp force injuries, ruling that the manor was homicide. Nick, who has a history of violence and drug addiction and lived in his parents’ guest house, was arrested near downtown LA Sunday night after allegedly leaving bloody evidence at a hotel in Santa Monica. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders because he used a deadly weapon, a knife, to allegedly kill his parents. He is facing a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. On Saturday night, Nick joined his parents for a Christmas party at Conan O’Brien’s house. Sources said Nick looked out of place at the bash and was acting crazy, behaving creepily, and freaking everyone out. He also allegedly had a bizarre exchange with Bill Hater. Allegedly, Rob scolded his son over his inappropriate antics, which led to some kind of argument. A source who knew Nick as a child described him to Page Six as intense and egocentric, explaining that he had inexhaustible energy and serious behavioral issues. Our source wondered whether ADHD was ever at play, as children and teens with ADHD are more likely to abuse substances. Notably, Nick has been to rehab almost 20 times and experienced bouts of homelessness, which he and Rob chronicled in the 2015 film Being Charlie. Nick has allegedly always had a hostile and volatile dynamic with his family, but his anger was mostly directed at his parents. A source elaborated to page six that Nick really resented his dad and hated himself for not being as talented, prolific, or beloved as the award-winning actor director. Another source described Nick as a spoiled and unappreciative Nepo baby. For more on this developing story, stick with page six.com.
