Ryan Lochte Reacts to Backlash About Estranged Wife, Selling Medals | E! News

Ryan Lochi is standing by his decision to sell his Olympic medals. In a lengthy statement posted to Instagram December 18th, the Olympian clarified his decision to auction off three of the six gold medals he won during his four Olympic appearances amid his divorce from wife Kayla Lochi. He says in part, quote, “I never swam for the gold medals. My passion has always been about being one of the best swimmers in the world. Those medals, they were just the cherry on top of an incredible journey.” Ryan and Kayla, who share three children, Kate and live in Georgia, announced their divorce in June after Kayla initially filed in March. He adds of their tumultuous split, quote, “There’s a lot happening behind the scenes that I’ve chosen to keep private to protect my kids.” [music] He continues, quote, I recognize that Kayla has shared our wedding vows on her page to highlight the authenticity of what we once had. While I respect that, I still stand by my belief that we didn’t fully know each other. And honestly, I didn’t know myself for who I was. I’m very thankful for our three children and the love we shared at that time. During his statement, Ryan admits his behavior during their marriage was not always the best and reveals he is getting professional help to do the inner work on himself. For her part, Kayla has also been candid about how difficult the breakdown of her marriage has been. Writing on Instagram on October 24th, quote, “I’m currently navigating a complex divorce, and let me tell you, divorce can feel like being frozen in time. I’m using this season to rebuild, rediscover who I am, and chase my dreams with clarity and courage.

Ryan Lochte clarified recent comments he made about estranged wife Kayla Reid Lochte, as well as his decision to sell three of his six Olympic gold medals. 1. Selling your Olympic gold medals is a huge statement, no matter how much he says he didn’t swim 'for the medals.' It feels like he’s trying to scrub the past. I just hope this 'tell-all' book doesn’t air too much dirty laundry for the sake of their kids.
