That take is bizarre and seemingly the result misusing language to the point that many people no longer understand what those words mean. It is possible to both empathize with a person's reason(s) for being racist, feminist, misogynist, etc (i.e. repeated abuse by that group), while acknowledging that is what they are. If something hates the human race and think of them as "lesser", then they are racist, by definition, regardless of their reason(s) for being racist.
