Yeah uhm… she did Gothika, James Bond’s Die Another Day and reprised her role as Storm in before doing Catwoman, while both were decent, it’s Catwoman that pretty much nuked her career, while Gothika was great, she was kind of mehh in Bond and pretty much forgettable AGAIN as Storm.
So it was probably her acting that just wasn’t exactly great
Oscars are overrated in general. TONS of actors have won and haven't done much since.
Remember Melissa Leo from 'The fighter'? Jean Dujardn from 'The Artist'? Or even repeat examples like Adrien Brody, who won 2x and still has only done miscellaneous roles here and there with his most notable being a random villain on Peaky Blinders.
There are legit Oscar Winners who end up having more underwhelming careers than mediocre actors like Mark Wahlberg.
I feel like no one has looked at halley barey as black since swordfish or X-Men at the least
Complain a little more
Let’s be real about this. She’s half black. But then why does one’s ethnicity have anything to do with acting talent? Postmodern values are on the wane and really do not promote equality but exceptionalism.
Cynthia Erivo should have won last year for the first Wicked. Mikey Madison was great in Anora, and I loved Demi Moore in The Substance but I felt like other actresses could have stepped into those roles and succeeded. Not a single person could have done what Cynthia Erivo did as Elphaba in Wicked. She played the character with immense, show-stopping gravitas and her voice is unlike any other. It was insane that she was not more in the conversation to win last year or this year.
Funny how Hollywood likes to pretend to uphold social justice morality yet behind closed doors it remains a white supremacist institution.
Cynthia Orivo doesn't deserve any praise. She is so disgustingly uptight, self entitled and toxic.
Every award show for movies ,tv shows and music should be cancelled
Cynthia is such a narcissist
She's so gross how she carries herself
She's definitely not a role model
So many well deserving black women for the Oscar.
Cynthia is not one of them.
IT SHOULDVE BEEN ANGELA BASSET!!!!!! but there shouldn't have been, if Angela won, a HUGE window in between the 2 winning.
So the biggest take I got from this is that the world does not mess with black…hmmm the world don’t like itz soul???
💙💜💙
WHINING
"Barely moved the needle on her career". She's already an A list entitled actor. Where does she think her career is going to go?
Does anyone outside of Hollywood even care about acting awards?
Cinthia whatever has not earned an Oscar, wtf?
This is so real and genuine and thoughtful of Halle Berry to do; what an honest, if hearthurting, earnest bit of advice for another woman of colour 💜.
And, YES HALLE BERRY✊🏾 YOU ICONIC LADY, such grace and gumption to call out the systemic prejudice and realities of such nonsense!
(EDIT: though I'll mull over the question [oscar award influence/singificance and whether it's better for that to continue to fall or not vs the recognition potentially for people, particularly own voices and BIPOC peoples], I do hope that the same is not so proportionally true for BIPOC people, including Cynthia Erivo in terms of positive impact. I hope it is better basically, now. But this is also Trump's America…)
Wait… is that still the case in 2026? I don’t follow awards
To this day that Oscar dress Halle Berry wore that year hasn’t been topped. The best dressed woman ever.
Viola Davis should have won over Meryl Streep in 2011. That was the closest things got to another black woman receiving the Best Actress in a Leading Role. There were of course a few nominees in the meantime but they did not have the same weight and traction as Viola received as a frontrunner to win. Thankfully Michelle Yeoh's win broke the awkwardly long streak of just white ladies winning. Lily Gladstone (Native American) had a real shot at getting the gold but was then outshone by Emma Stone who also rightfully deserved to win for Poor Things. But who knows how long again before another person of color is granted a win? It's a real shame.
Halle she😊 is a Iconic-Legendary Actress & Queen👑 & she isn't wrong👀
Halle Berry is not a great actress, sorry.
Let’s do math, blacks make up 14.4% of the US population. Assuming there is no racial bias for or against anything, career selection, ticket sales, etc etc you would still only expect 1-2 black women to win that category in the time following. Beyond that, there are much more meaningful racial issues than Hollywood and somehow award season or the general bias for the entertainment of the majority race, white, overshadows them.
If we lived in a just world we would have a whole franchise of Storm movies with Halle Berry instead of all the wolverine movies.
That girl looks like a bugs life character
The award shows are all highly political.
Yh, like viola davis, like angela basset, they deserved one, specifically in this category. I would argue letitia wright is a good one too
The bit that shocked me was her thinking Cynthia Erivo deserved an oscar 😂😂
Oscars, Grammy’s and most awards don’t seem to really choose the best of any category. It relies more on who has paid the most to get their nominations in front of the voting committee and that committee also voting according to what they think is high art at the moment. Doesn’t matter whether or not it’s reflected in sales or even positive reviews from the public. Nowadays the work speaks for itself. It’s more important for actors to act well and musicians to play/sing well, choose that which exemplifies their craft, and even to a lesser extent having some sort of social media presence/ way for their fans to keep up with what they’re doing and upcoming projects.
Reminds me of that one episode of The Studio
"Black movies dont sell overseas" I think you might be getting your words mixed up there Berry. Because over here in the rest of the world, its you Americans that dont accept black movies, not us.
I Berry's point and her career trajectory might be a bit muddled by the fact that either that same year or the year after she won a Razzie for worst actor for Catwoman. And to her credit she went to the Razzies and accepted that award like a class act. But what I mean is any credibility she has as a good actor is undercut by the award saying she is a bad actor. So split the difference and she's probably an okay actor that got a good hit with Monster's Ball and a big miss with Catwoman. Weirdly I think there are stronger black actresses that are deserving of best actress far more often than Berry. But they get supporting roles and thus don't qualify for best actress in a leading role. So Berry's point still has a ton of merit.
"Black movies don't sell" is a wild sentence. Not saying it unfortunately might not be true, but it absolutely should not be true.
They could move to Africa and avoid these problems
she got 20M to do Cat Women which only hand full of actors made that money it was close to a record at the time for male or female . To put that in Perspective Matt Damon got 10M for Jason Bourne and Robert Downie Jr got 2M for Iron man and 15M for Iron man two . Problem is the movie tanked and it was bad but without the oscar no way she gets that pay day and if made 400M she would of had a lot more Big roles. Little to do with race especially when foreign market wasn't as important at the time.
studios being morons like that just means that the oscars and other award shows are pointless. do i think these people don't deserve awards?, hell no, far from it, they are talented as hell but studios are proving that they don't care about these awards and honestly not sure if they ever did. which is extremely dumb on their end.
But she also won a Razzie that same year.
Maybe they canceled out one another.
Thank you! People don't realize Hollywood doesn't cast black people in roles out of kindness it's metrics, and if it won't sell they ain't casting them.
She’s not black 😂❤ half black
Um.. the black actress from gone with the wind? She wasn't the the first black actress
Who the hell nominated Cynthia for an Oscar… Twice? Shows how terribly irrelevant Oscars are now. They just nominate the latest "trend".
P. S: Halle B was amazing in Monster Ball and definitely deserved her Oscar.
I can’t believe Octavia, Lupita, or Viola haven’t won an Oscar in that category yet
Hollywood is run by racist zios …. What do you expect?
She is correct! Viola has deserved one many times over…
Can i be honest. I dont care
