Britney Spears Sells Music Catalog | E! News

Ten years after her last studio album, Britney Spears has sold her music catalog to publisher Primary Wave, according to multiple outlets. While the price tag for Britney’s music was not disclosed, legal docs obtained by TMZ show she signed away the ownership share of her music catalog in December. Musicians like Justin Bieber, Bruce Springsteen and Shakira have also parted ways with the ownership of their music in sales to other companies, while Taylor Swift’s masters were famously sold by her former label Big Machine Records in 2019 before she purchased them from Shamrock Capital in 2025. 1. It's actually genius. She's milked her brand for all its worth. The hundreds of millions that used to roll in are less than 10s of millions. She has absolutely no intention of making another single, so she's basically selling an empty bucket. 😂👌🏻

    2. Pretty sure her greedy team sold it for her and shes not getting paid ANYTHING. Huge mistake! She is a legend and those songs are worth more than what they gave her.

    3. She still has income… Lol. Books. Fragrance. Clothes. She still owns the name Britney Spears too. Y'all are crazy. Hate one minute. Praise her the next. Back to hating. Smh

    4. Why are people disagreeing with that? It’s basically her saying “I won’t make more than 200 million from royalties so id rather sell them”. Bieber and Katy Parry also did that

Ha pedig a lábad botránkoztat meg, vágd le azt! Jobb sántán mégy be az életre, mint két lábbal a pokolba vetve.

    6. Here’s a perspective…
As with the stock market, the optimal time to sell is when your stock is at its peak. Less than optimal time is anytime the stock is valued more than you paid for it.
With music, if you’re not hearing the song on the radio, it’s lost most of its value as a single
Most music companies will rebundle it into
      “Greatest Hits of XYZ”
      “Greatest Hits of the 90’s!…”

    7. This comment section, & not to mention AMERICA, is ridiculous when it comes to Britney Spears. NEIL YOUNG and STEVIE NICKS did the EXACT SAME THING. But whenever Britney does something, everybody has to criticize her for it and question her sanity. GOOD FOR HER! BRITNEY NOW HAS 260 MILLION MORE DOLLARS THAN ANY OF YOU LOSERS IN THE COMMENT SECTION. I'd say she's probably living the good life, lol! Americans are morons

    8. Naturally, the value of Britney Spears’ music catalog is pretty much immeasurable, so the 200 million dollars they paid for it doesn’t fully reflect its real worth. But honestly, I think it was a smart move on her part—why not cash in on the fruits of her life’s work now instead of waiting for all those different revenue streams to trickle in over the years?

In the end, her biggest income source would’ve still been performing live if she wanted to do that, but in this case, it’s like getting an advance payment for what she’d earn over the years anyway. And another aspect is that this way she doesn’t have to worry about her heirs getting something they didn’t really earn. She’s the one receiving the money personally, not leaving the rights to fall into the hands of heirs who might not deserve them. Because if an artist passes away, obviously the heirs would inherit those rights—and I guess nobody really wants Britney’s catalog ending up with the Federline family.

    9. Estate Planning: Britney Spears and older legends, like Bob Dylan, often sell to simplify their estates, ensuring their heirs (I'm assuming her children) receive cash rather than complex legal battles over royalties. (Sounds like something her dad, mom, Jamie and KFed would do.)

Tax Advantages: Selling a catalog is often taxed as capital gains rather than standard income, which can save artists millions in taxes. EVERYBODY APPRECIATES LESS TAXES 👀

    10. I love Britney Spears! ❤In the Zone will always be my absolute favorite album, and Me Against the Music will forever be my all-time favorite song and music video. Forever! ❤ But I did read her book The Woman in Me, and it makes me think she wants to leave behind and shed her pop past, in which she was so traumatized (Justin, the paparazzi, and also us fans), and why not get a lot of money for it? As a nice side effect? Whether she actually needs the money or not, she can shed her past that way and maybe also find closure, and maybe it helps her, which I really hope, so that she feels better and becomes happy!

Today I believe that not only the paparazzi contributed to her trauma, but we fans did too! Because we devoured all the photos and news and craved them! And because we fans also mobbed, swarmed and hunt her. When Britney was in my city back then for her Onyx Hotel Tour, I waited for her in front of the hotel, and of course many other fans and paparazzi did too. And when Britney, surrounded by her bodyguards and police officers, came out of the hotel to go to her limousine, a totally chaotic, aggressive, stormy crush and shoving broke out! Everyone pushed, everyone pressed toward Britney, and yes, me too….

We fans screamed hysterically and pushed relentlessly, simply blind with love, and the paparazzi were extremely aggressive and pushed just as ruthlessly out of greed for money. Despite her bodyguards and the police trying to protect her and clear a path to the limousine, but no chance, Britney was almost crushed by us… Truly, I think it wouldn’t have taken much more for us to have simply crushed her. Her bodyguards and the police were basically helpless against us hysterical fans and the aggressive paparazzi!

I actually managed to squeeze my way so far to the front that I could touch Britney on her shoulder, and as stupid and blinded by love as I was, I immediately tugged like crazy the shoulder of the blazer from the black pantsuit she was wearing, until one of her bodyguards hit me with an elbow and I let go. In the crush, we fans also tore her blazer… And afterwards I was so sad that I didn’t manage to tear off a piece of it for myself. Today I’m ashamed of that and of my behavior!

In the end the pushing got so extreme that, despite her bodyguards and the police, Britney simply couldn’t reach her limousine and had to flee back into the hotel before she was REALLY crushed…

After the crush I had lots of bruises, a bruised toe, and scratches. I don’t even want to imagine what Britney had to endure, since everyone was pressing against her and so many hands were pulling at her and her blazer and would have loved to tear her apart…

So we fans definitely share some of the blame!

But to end on something nice: the video for Me Against the Music made me fall in love with blazers, pantsuits, and skirtsuits, and since then I love wearing suits, whether at the office or in my free time. Even when I’m just out in the city or meeting friends or something, I wear my many chic pantsuits and skirtsuits and I love it! And if I’m ever not wearing a suit, I still always wear at least a blazer with my outfit. Really! I never leave my flat without a blazer, haha! 😊
