Prince Harry has given his first ‘reaction’ to the arrest of his uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in his first televised interview in Jordan. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are currently in the Middle East at the invitation of Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The couple, who stepped down from being working royals back in 2020, have travelled to Amman, Jordan, to highlight the efforts to support communities affected by conflict in Gaza and have been displaced. Featuring elements of a ‘royal tour’, the couple visited charities and community groups on their two-day visit.
This trip comes after Andrew Mounbatten Windsor was taken into custody on February 19 on the suspicion of misconduct in public office. After being questioned for 11 hours on his 66th birthday, the former prince returned to his new home on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
While Andrew has continually denied any wrongdoing in concern to allegations made about his connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the arrest is understood to accuse Andrew of sharing confidential files with the American financier while he was the UK’s trade envoy, reports the Express.
In his first televised interview while in Jordan, the topic of Harry’s disgraced uncle cropped up. At the beginning of the Channel 4 interview, political correspondent Paul McNamara stated the 41-year-old did not want to answer questions about Andrew as it would take away from the current issue of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
On the programme, Paul said: “The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is dire. No one in the region is shouldering the burden as much as here in Jordan. And the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were left in no uncertain terms just how desperate the situation is over the last two days. They are walking a diplomatic tightrope.”

He went on to add: “Prince Harry’s people did not want him answering questions about Israel. The Prince did not want to answer questions about his uncle Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
“The fear is that every headline would be about that and not what is unfolding in Gaza and the refugee camps here in Jordan.”
However, just a few minutes into the interview the correspondent was seen to bring up Andrew. He said: “Look, I understand you don’t wish to talk about your family, your uncle, things back in London. You’re here because you don’t want to distract from the work you’re doing on WHO and Gaza.”
Upon the mention of his uncle, Harry refused to react as he remained looking at the reporter while keeping tight lipped. As he gained no response, Paul was seen to move on to ask about the Duke’s work in Jordan.
Speaking about the current situation in Gaza 16 months on from the beginning of the conflict, Harry stated: “There is a lot of stuff in the news. It goes at an incredible pace and what’s been happening in that region has been going on for a long time and it drops out of the news.
“So I think it was a really important time for us to collaborate and come here and shine a light and focus on the very real humanitarian catastrophe that has happened and continues.”
Since Andrew’s arrest, a source has revealed what Prince Harry truly feels about the matter. The source said: “Harry made his views about Andrew abundantly clear in his book three years ago, at a time when other parts of the institution remained silent.
“For that candour he was vilified and ostracised by the institution, sections of the press and significant parts of British society for ‘airing the family’s dirty laundry’ and challenging the status quo. I’m not surprised he isn’t leaping up to start offering his two cents on this.”
In his memoir Spare, Harry revealed Andrew was one of the main reasons he never expected to be stripped of his security protection in the UK.
He wrote: “Despite being involved in an embarrassing scandal, accused of having sexually abused a young woman, nobody had suggested removing his security. People may have a lot of grievances towards us, but sexual offences weren’t one of them.”
