I have always felt this way.

Like when CEOs are like “people aren’t going to theaters anymore!” And I’m like…okay, are we supposed to feel sorry for you because your billion-dollar company is loosing money and be gulit tripped into seeing Marvel Movie No. 5,011 or Remake of 80s-90s Disney Cartoon No. 3,000?

There are so many good to great movies that come out and no one ever sees them so I’m not actually sure that’s the problem. I think some people might think there aren’t movies worth seeing but that could be a marketing issue.

(I usually go to the movies at least twice a week and I’m not rewatching movies)

  4. They are worth seeing. We just have a better way to see them than they did in the 30s. We don’t have to do to a theater. We have large screens at home. We can get the movies at home sometimes the day they are released.

Justifying spending 40+ dollars per person to see a movie is just a big hurdle for most people. I’m not a huge fan of seeing most movies in theaters, but I’ll make the trek for stuff that wouldn’t hit the same on my TV at home. Top Gun Maverick was a great example of this – I took my dad for his birthday and we had an amazing time but it was freaking expensive for 2 hours of entertainment for two people. That’s why I had no desire to see something like Sinners in theaters.

  6. Eh the problem with ‘worth seeing’ is that I’ll happily wait 6-12 weeks for the film to be available for me to watch at home, where I can still have a great watching experience and not pay an exorbitant amount,

Thank you! It really is the economy’s job to keep prices from jacking up. There are so many movies I want to see in theaters this year, but have to have a select few. Tickets are WAY too expensive!

The marketing for Hail Mary and The Drama is definitely making me go to the movie theater.

As long as streaming continues to be the more affordable option, a lot of films and theaters will sink.

Ironically, studios are heavily relying on established IPs and sequels, since they’re seen as safer bets for profit compared to original films. It’s not really a matter of quality, because the live action Moana looks shitty, but it will probably make a billion dollars.

I want more fathom events! Give me screenings of proshots of Broadway/Westend shows and I’ll show up, buy an outrageously expensive popcorn, and be grateful.

  11. Even great movies are frequently going to be a better experience for me in the comfort of my own home. Pretty much the only ones that I’d consider the theater for are the big, action films and honestly those aren’t the “good” movies most people are thinking of.

And this doesn’t even consider how expensive it is to go to the movies now.

  12. There are plenty good movies out. The issue they are not in the cinema long enough to build up a word of mouth. If I see something first week by the time I tell someone about and they want to go the second week; it’s gone!

The problem is almost entirely on the business side.

Not enough movies are being made and widely released for theaters.  The ones that *are* being made are so expensive that they have to be a massive hit in order to break even.  Make more movies, make more mid/small budget movies.  Fix your own business model.

also making trailers that entice you to wanna go watch something

the trailer for Project Hail Mary made me buy the book in anticipation

I don’t recall the last trailer that evoked a similar reaction in me

  15. Remove popcorn from theaters. That will get me interested. Until then, I prefer to stay at home.

I still remember going to see a Ai Wei Wei documentary about syrian refugees and people were munching away buckets of popcorn like the movie was for entertainment.

The real problem is that everyone has a decent flat screen TV at home and the option to rent new movies to see at home with their entire family for 5-20 dollars like 1 month after movies are out of theaters. People also now have an endless supply of other entertainment with their streaming services…

I wish people weren’t feral, no one knows how to behave in public anymore, too many are on their phones with full brightness or having loud conversations during movies (and live performances). We just have Cinemark here (aging ones at that) so even the chairs and sound system sucks. Lousy theater setups plus bad audience behavior makes me so depressed and not willing to spend money going out.

  18. For me its simple I got a 64 inch on my wall with a very comfortable recliner, so unless its the rare movie I feel the need to see day 1 I am happy to wait to watch it from the comfort of my home.

Hollywood needs to take risks again!

It seems like the only movies that make it to theaters are the guaranteed franchise shit.. every once in a while risks are taken, but it’s just not like it used to be. I remember going to theaters and being able to choose from romance, comedy, action, horror, and drama. Nowadays it’s just action and horror, so if you aren’t into that, they give you 0 options.
